Extremely dissatisfied with Gaggenau Appliances

We recently remodeled a kitchen and purchased all new Gaggenau appliances (double oven, dishwasher, refrigerator, gas cook-top).
Though the appliances look great, we are very unhappy with the reliability and service we have received.
The double oven stopped working when only a couple of months old. It was purchased new.
The malfunctioning part was only in one of the ovens, however, neither unit would work. It took a week for a Gaggenau technician to get out to examine the problem. Then a part had to be ordered. It took another week for the part to get in and for the technician to get back out to install it. So we were without an oven for over two weeks.
We just had our Gaggenau dishwasher (in use for only nine months) suddenly stop working. It will take a week for Gaggenau to get a technician to come out to examine it.
These are expensive, supposedly high-end, appliances and two of them have needed repair in less than a year. Also we live in a large metropolitan area so there should be an adequate number of techs available.
I do not recommend Gaggenau appliances. We will not purchase Gaggenau in the future.

I think at least the service turnaround time is reasonable. I have some Miele's, and I don't think they will do better. It usually takes them weeks to respond to my emails if at all. And I would be thankful it was not the fridge. But the reliability part was kinda shocking. Could it be related to the quality of power source?

My Miele Combi Steam oven died 5 days after we moved into a new home. None of the steam related functions worked. It took 3 weeks just to get a tech out to diagnose and then another 4 weeks to get parts and a second tech scheduled to help with getting it out of the wall. I am in a large metro area (Tampa/St. Pete/Clearwater) and there is one Miele tech in the area. They drove his supervisor up from Boca to assist. So Miele at this point in really no better timeline wise. Tech told me he is usually scheduled out a minimum of two weeks and no plans to add a second tech.

Agree that speed of service seems adequate but I would certainly be dismayed to have 2 appliances break within a year. That does not speak well for the brand.

Sorry to hear about this, and good to know for future reference. For the price Gagg charges on their stuff, no one should ever be disappointed in them

@eshmh, I don't think it is related to the power source. We have not had any problems with televisions, computers, microwaves (not Gaggenau), crock pot, etc.

Maybe the time to get a tech out is standard for high end brands, but in the past with GE or Kitchenaid we were able to get techs out in the 2-3 day range. Once we had to have a motor replaced in a Kitchenaid dishwasher and the tech was back with the motor two days later.

Another potential problem surfaced last night. When we turned on the oven it displayed an error code and did not start. Fortunately, it worked when we turned it off and back on. However this is the way it behaved when we had the original problem with the ovens.

In the future I would only purchase a brand that had a significant number of high reliability ratings. We couldn't find many detailed ratings on Gaggenau appliances prior to purchasing them. We did read a number of posts here on Gardenweb about how much people enjoyed using their Gaggenau double ovens.

When ours work, they do perform well and they look great. Still, I would never purchase Gaggenau again.

I agree with the time to service. And as Jakvis says service guys are a dying breed which is amazing due to the amount they can earn, an average service call under warranty can cost a manufacture $70 to asses the issue and a further $100 + to fix the problem once they have the parts. A call outside of warranty can cost the home owner even more. Multiply that by 5 calls per day its a good trade to be in, especially with the reliability of applainces in general getting worse. As for your issues with Gaggenau IMO they are a highly technical units very computer orientated maybe to complicated.

If I charged $70-100.00 per call, I'd be broke so fast it wouldn't be funny. How much drive time between stops? A tech's gotta get paid for that.

The reason techs are a dying breed isn't pay or work ethic, it's social status. You wanna brag how your daughter married an appliance tech instead of doctor or lawyer? I didn't think so.

I also agree on the time to service -- 1 week really seems pretty good. We had to get our Miele dryer serviced in December, and it was about 10 days before the tech could come out, and we had to get the tech that Miele contracted (not the official guy employed by Miele) to do the work.

I can't speak to the reliability of Gagg vs. Miele, although I can tell you that our Miele W/D have needed a ton of repairs, so I'm not sure it's all that much better (although our Miele DW, thank goodness, is going strong). I did recently purchase a bunch of Gagg kitchen appliances, though, so I hope the quality is better than what you're describing!

I just got my gaggenau double oven. I heard there was a recall and they actually shipped ovens back to germany from the US to fix them. Installed ovens were fixed on site. I hope mine doesn't stop working! So far I am loving it. I also have gaggenau fridge/freezer which I am satisfied with so far. there was an issue with one of the glass shelves being installed incorrectly, and they sent a tech out within a few days to fix it. One thing you can ask for, is they will send a gaggenau approved local person to fix your issue instead of waiting for gaggenau tech. I opted for this. I am told miele makes the gaggenau fridge.

The ovens cook beautifully, and I am loving the side swing doors.

As far as I know, Miele fridges are made by Liebherr :)

Not in the US, the Miele fridges here are made in Turkey by Thermador.

Miele sells two fridges in the US. One made by Miele (The Mastercool columns) and the other made by Liebherr.

    Good luck!

Just the columns, or all of the Mastercool series?

Miele version of Liebherr fridges and freezers

    Miele Mastercool columns

The Mastercool units are built by BSH in Turkey.

From my research, Gagg has a 2.9% failure rate in year one average. The "regular" appliance companies are in the 25% to 30% range. If you read any of the reviews of Whirlpool or GE's products, you'll find a lot of folks who tell it like it is. Ovens failing if you use the self cleaning feature. So perhaps your results could be worse with other brands. Of course my Gagg oven is working fine so far..........knock on wood.

I'm also a very unhappy Gaggenau customer. See thread here for why.

    Never again Gaggenau

About 10 years ago we bought the predecessor to the Gaggenau RY492305 refrigerator-freezer with French doors, supposedly a top model of this supposedly high-end brand. It cost well over EUR 10,000 (then about US$ 14,000). A couple of months ago the freezer suddenly stopped working. We called for service and were extremely disappointed when the technician declared the entire expensive refrigerator-freezer to be irreparable--not just the freezer, but the whole thing--and that there was nothing he or the company could or would do! At that lofty price point you would expect exemplary longevity and reparability. I made several attempts to contact customer service for some kind of accommodation--no response. Gaggenau evidently has zero interest in customer goodwill once they sold you their quite ordinary but egregiously overpriced device. I will replace our fridge with another brand and never buy anything Gaggenau again.

@Dennis Jacob, @macuhail, @dietitian, how have your Gaggenau ovens held up over the last few years? I'm considering purchasing the steam oven and convection wall ovens for my new build but I can't find any reviews about longevity. I'm older and have health issues and really like the side opening doors and the push button door open option. If I spend the money, I'd like the product to last.

About a month ago, the magnetic knob to our Gaggenau cooktop came apart. Ordered a replacement knob - no big deal. Took a week for the knob to arrive. However, when the new knob came in -- it was inferior to our original/broken knob. Took several turns for the temp to increase in number. The magnet on the old knob was also stronger than the new one.

I reached out to customer service and was told that I ordered the correct replacement knob, but they would need to send a service tech out to perform a diagnosis to determine if this is a cooktop issue or a defective knob before they can send a replacement knob. I called their recommended local authorized tech. However, they told me that they don't service Gaggenau appliances. After some back and forth with the rep, they sent this up to a manager to help find a service tech who's willing to travel to us to perform this diagnosis.

I am 1.5 months in with no end in sight. After calling in AGAIN, and close to tears are they willing to send me a "courtesy" replacement knob. If this doesn't work, I'm going back to basic-ass stoves.

Gagganeau stay away our refridgerator and coffee maker both broke down Gagganeau says no service technicians in our area in NY Did all our appliances with Gagganeau a few years back Will never deal with them again and recommend to stay away

No reason to go through Gagganeau for service if the units are out of warranty. Look for independent local servicers. Gagganeau is a German brand, part of BSH Hausgeräte GmbH which includes Bosch, Neff, Siemens, and Thermador in the U.S.

I agree. Last year I did all new kitchen with all Gaggenau appliances. The coffee machine has been broken for almost 5 months. They kept cancelling my appointment ( about four or five times) because it seems they could n't schedule two techs to come at once to do the job. Then finally last week the 2 techs showed up, removed the coffee machine to replace the heat element which was defective. Guess what , the replacement heating element they unwrapped was broken! I can't tell you how annoying this is. No one from Gaggenau has bothered to call me, or email to tell me what the next step is. I am furious. Trying to get in touch with Gaggenau is a huge pain. They don't seem to have too many people working the phones either.

@Richard Tschernia, how are your other Gaggenau appliances working? I've pretty much decided against a Gaggenau refrigerator or coffee maker. But, my parents have had Gaggenau ovens for over 20 years and they've been great. I'm still strongly considering Gaggenau for double convection ovens and a combi steam oven. There's just so little info online about reliability on the ovens. I would appreciate any additional input from anyone that's had Gaggenau ovens for a while.
