Craft Room Design Help needed

I was inspired to design a craft room based on a posting I saw here on Houzz. The chair I bought to watch TV seems too small in scale to the craft table. I love the table so would want to replace the chair instead. Any advice on a comfortable chair and any other advice on what I can do to make the room have that WOW factor? I wanted the base furniture in neutral so that I can decorate with accessories by season. I hope you don't mind all the photos but I wanted to show enough of the room for you to get a good idea. Thanks in advance for your help and critique.

Is this an Ikea island that you are using for your craft table? I just looked at one for my new sewing room.

I love the table. The chair will depend, I think, on the craft you do. For example, I knit and, therefore, the chair you have there would be ideal for me, even though it is too short for the table.

Also, maybe, hang a nice idea board? It could be a metal one so you use colorful magnets or a nice cork board.

    Hope this helps a little?

Hi jlouise54. Yes, the craft table is an Ikea island. I really like it.

Thanks, mitra9! I will use the chair for watching TV. I got it at Wayfair but it is too small in scale for the table and a little small to sit in comfortably. I am going to send it back. I can't get too big of a chair because I think it will look too crowded but it can't be too small because it is dwarfed by the table. I suppose I could move the table back a bit but I really wanted enough room to walk around it. The two short cabinets behind the table, against the wall, are Ikea Alexa drawer cabinets. I had to turn them on their side because they are long and stick out too far. I thought that I might try moving them on either side of the TV cabinet and then I can move the table back a bit. I plan on putting up an idea board as you suggest. Thanks so much!!!

check RH small spaces. they have chairs that are the same as the classic designs but on a smaller scale. or check other apartment friendly retailers like CB2 or West Elm.... personally think you could use a pop of color in the room and should get a bright pattern or solid color chair =)

Thanks, Francesca. I was hoping to get a pop of color from the accessories and pillows. I will check out RH small spaces.

My craft room is always being used so I can't imagine any kind of "wow factor". That almost seems mutually exclusive. What kind of "wow" are you looking for?

Well, the "wow" is that I want is to be inspired to go in and stay in the room because it is pretty and comfortable. You know, a Woman Cave.

I was hoping to bring in color from accessories and wall decor. I don't really want to paint walls if I can get away with it.

The chair that I purchased from Wayfair looks too small so I am sending it back. I need a chair that will fit the scale of the room and table. I want to keep the table somewhat in the middle of the room so that I can easily move around it. It doesn't look like much space in the picture but I can go a little wider and deeper with a chair. I don't know if it looks like I'm cramming furniture in by going with a bigger scale chair. Not sure if I just need more height or what.

I plan to get a counter stool or chair to use while I'm working at the table but also want a nice comfy chair that I can watch TV in or read a book. I have a couple of ottomans under the window that I can easily move over to a chair. I thought possibly getting a recliner that is not too bulky and plump. You know, one of those recliners that look like a chair.

Thanks for your help, feedback, critique...anything. I welcome it all from anyone who wants to help.

Well, my sewing room is in the finished basement in what was once a spare bedroom. My table is a big slab of wood sitting on two half-filing cabinets. The closet doors were taken off and my husband installed open shelving. The ironing board is always up and I have an old tv attached near the ceiling in a corner. Other storage is simply old bedroom dressers. I'm always complaining about not having enough light so my husband just removed the cover on the overhead light. Not much "wow" but I love it and I feel so lucky to have my own space. I used to have to set up my machine in the dining room and take it down and clean up for meals. What I have now, although not the least bit luxurious, is a great gift. I do recommend you give a lot of thought to light fixtures. The overhead light is not ideal by any means. I have asked for "Ott" lights which are pure lights that really help you see actual colors and might be good for reading as well. I do have a couple, but I can always use more.

You already have a lovely room. What you decide to do while in the room will dictate a lot of the features you add. Oh, something else: I have hung a few pieces of "art" that I enjoy but are not really suitable in more public places in the house. You may like to do that too. Since I primarily do sewing in my room, I keep a vacuum cleaner in there too for clean up.

It will come together over time. You've already got a good start.

Thanks classysass. I didn't really think about it before I started getting comments but I do agree that I need better overhead lighting. My husband will cringe but I know he will replace it for me when I get a new fixture. I like having the ceiling fan but it IS NOT good lighting. I can always plug in a fan if I find that it gets too hot.

I saw some really cute prints of fashionably dressed women along with some gray frames at Ikea so may pick some of those up next time I shop there.

I really need to conquer the chair dilemma. I may move my husbands recliner in to see how it fits to know if the size will work then order something specifically to fill the space.

I know what you mean about having to take down your project to clear the way for meals or in my case to tidy up the study area that I was using before the new craft room. That was such a hassle so this new craft room is a blessing and I can just close the door if it too messy.

    Thanks for the encouragement.

Oh...besides the chair dilemma, what do you think about the blinds? I would really like to get shutters for all the windows in the house. I find that I spend so much on drapery that maybe just fork out the money for blinds and just be done with all that extra stuff to make up the window.

Hi there! I know this discussion is old, but how big is this room?? I was looking to do the EXACT same thing in my house but I don't know if I have enough space.

Ana-A free and easy way to play around with furniture layout is to set up an account at roomsketcher.com. You can draw your room to its exact dimensions, add windows and doors, and then put your furniture in place. I didn't have much trouble figuring out how to use it, but I did have to use the help feature a few times. Here's what I came up with:

For the furniture, I just found items similar to what I actually have and changed the dimensions to match my actual pieces. (I know this room doesn't look good from a design point of view, but right now I'm concentrating on function and checking to see if what I already have will fit into the space.) After you get all your furniture in the room, you can rotate it and slide it around to try different lay-outs. You can also take 2D pictures of your room from different angles (that funny green thing in the room is a camera). Here's a picture of my project

The free version of room sketcher has a lot of features. I have drawn a layout of my whole house and have had a lot of fun virtually arranging my furniture. I like being able to try it out virtually before asking my husband to help me drag things around to room. Good luck with your craft room. You're going to love it!
