Having lived across the bay in Berkeley, I wonder if it's not so much the cold but the wet that kills them. Are they kept dry during the cool weather? Pots can get quite soggy.

No question they are getting a lot of water. I guess if I build an enclosure that will both keep out frost and rain.

How cold does it get for you? These often like it cold (relatively) and wet in winter.
