Bathroom: Neutrals Gone Wrong--I'd Rather Pee Outside!!!

I know this bathroom might be someone's idea of beautiful, but as a lover of white and clean lines I find it anything but relaxing. I would love to demo the place and and put in classic white subway tile with a charcoal grout, hex white or marble floor tile--but it simply isn't in the budget.

Some background info--the tile is travertine, and goes a little over halfway up the wall around the entire bathroom. The room itself is really small--you can't have the bathroom door open if you want to open the single, very tiny, drawer on the sink vanity. Theres one of those molded corner soap dishes in the shower at standing height, as well as another soap dish at sitting level on the middle back wall. The back wall is mirrored, with a cutout for the cement ceiling beam at the middle top. There are two light fixtures on the mirror placed too close together (The wide angle of the photo distorts the image a bit).

I apologize for image quality, but the only one I have is from the realtor listing. The rest of the place (also painted that mustard yellow) has been redone in a transitional, leaning a bit industrial style. Think espresso shaker cabinets, dark wood floors, white trim, mixed metals--stainless, chrome, satin gold, clear glass and acrylic, pipe shelving, oriental rugs...etc.

Any ideas for turning my boring, uninspiring, neutral-galore, pee-colored walls bathroom into a retreat?

    an awesome shower curtain?

We had a very brown, very unprofessional, diy job for a bathroom when we moved. I told myself I could live with it, as it worked. Water ran and all.... I was able to wait a year and a half before I said, 'screw this, I really, really hate this bathroom.' We kind of went ahead of the reno budget and did it anyway.

I'm glad I did. It takes the stress out of my bedtime and morning routines and as busy as we are, it matters.

Can you tell us about what you want to spend?

You can hang a simple white shower curtain to hide that section. And that super large mirror is just off. Can that be taken down?

Inexpensive ways to help may be to paint the cabinet white. I'd also use a subtle curtain like white or cream to help tone down the huge amount of busy tile. It's really bizarre that the mirror practically ends into the bathtub area. You can possibly try the mirror frame from http://www.mirrormate.com to help shrink up and soften that large mirror. Good Luck!

I don't think it would cost that much to have the mirror and the tile up to the bathtub removed and dry wall repaired. When shower curtain in closed, you won't see the other tile. You could paint the vanity and walls white, change the shower curtain and art, add a lovely mirror and re-add your wall sconces. For a couple of hundred dollars you would have a new bathroom.

There are actually certain, highly skilled faux professionals who can take tile and skim over it and create a whole new tile look and color. It is absolutely amazing. It is not cheap, but less than a tear out and renovate. We have a professional here in Greensboro that can do this. You might check around.

Paint the walls and vanity white. Is there time behind that mirror? If you can replace it with a smaller framed mirror that might help too.

Getting rid of the yellow paint will help a lot -- it's emphasizing the pink tones in the travertine. Once you get a cooler cream or greyish tone in there, this may seem less offensive. Meantime, maybe you can change out the light fixtures to something you like (maybe very flush sconces if you really feel they're placed wrong) and get a very plain shower curtain (white or a very mild graphical pattern). Agree that while the espresso cabinet looks ok in this room, you might be happier with it white, and maybe update the faucet to nickel at the same time. All of that is likely to make it feel more "you" without costing a full arm and leg...

yellow walls, yellow accessories, and 'beside the point' shower curtain are doing this in. once you move in and get rid of all 3 you'll be a lot happier with it.

and it was 8F this morning... peeing outside gets old fast in the winter!

I hate travertine too, ESPECIALLY if its paired with brown wood veneer and silver fixtures. UGH is just screams 2004 Builders Special. I think all you do is

    Paint vanity

    Get a large bathmat/area rug

    Change shower curtain

    Paint walls

    Paint ceiling

Change hardware/plumbing fixutures tho I wouldn't spend money on this now if a remodel is in the near future.

Another idea to hang long shelf under mirror

Have the mirror removed (hoping no damage to drywall). Paint the vanity a soft white. Since you have the electrical, adjust the position to better suit you for sconces you like. Add a solid white canvas type shower curtain & bath rug. Use an old white frame over a new smaller mirror. Install some floating white shelves as shown above over the toilet for nice towels & an orchid.

Save up for a complete bath redo, done the way you like it. Don't go outside to potty.

Realtor's listing...do you own it or are you contemplating?

Ummm...pee outside? My 50 something neighbor pees in his backyard when he thinks no one can see him. We see you!!! Idiot.

Anyway, I would change anything that's easily changeable to white then take a second look at it. There are many beautiful shower curtains that are all white and look really rich.
