There are folding screens that could be used to divide a room.

They can be easily removed when not needed.

Hi thank you for all the suggestions. yes I have considered folding screen and bookcase before. I'm probably looking for creative ideas for bookshelves or folding screen. store bought is nice but that will be my last option.
and this room divider supposedly easy to move around and served to block view only. any creative suggestion is welcome. thanks again!

I recently found these screens which are close to the price of book shelves. Though the $20 walmart shelves with a nice wallpaper on back would probably be best, you can then hang a mirror on them, Ikea is very reasonable on casters. Christopher lowell used to put piano hinges on them too.

this is actually bathroom wall board, can be hung in the tub with caulking, i used some under my house once when pipes were freezing, lasted over 8 years. like indestructable. 4x8' = $13.00

Wow, why didn't I think of casters? Thank you, that is true it might not be cheap. but it is fun. What I'm still wondering probably is how tall or wide the bookcase should be. The distance between the wall is about 10 ft. I'm scared that It'll look like another bulky wall in the room.

I also have thought about using curtain and re purpose barn door, but I'm still unsure. I guess I'm always leaning towards re purposing old furniture, especially when it's cheap and awesome! Well, I guess I'm one of those homeowner who have so many ideas and still don't know which one to execute :(

Hi @havingfun I never see a wall board all my life :D please enlighten me.

It actually even has designs-which are so 80s, it is an inexpensive way for people to do a shower etc. But if you find reasonable wall paper, or you can paint the back, if hung supported enough you could probably put shelves on one side. Just go to home Depot or lowe's and look, stuff is not pretty, but it is very cheap. Cover it hang it, and you are done. need a pretty heavy duty hanger to hold it, it does weigh about 20 lbs(?) each. But 8' of wall for under $30, definitely an inexpensive solution. I have also seen someone hang large paintings, one under the other, but those are immovable i would think.

If you're open to something a bit vintage and unusual, I was just in a shop that used a few old half glass wood doors from the Habitat Restore. They were screwed together and hung from the ceiling as a room divider. They were all different, but she had painted them white. Even kept the glass knobs on them. Looked awesome. Just a thought.

Is the table in the separate living area a desk?

Find a few old rehabbed doors, same size and get hardware to make a divider. You could distress them or get a local artist to paint something on them. Nice and custom.

@er612 The table on the formal living room is a floating kind, bolted to the wall, but the table on the other room looks like this (bought it from JYSK)

and I planned to put this in between two similar tall drawers/ shelves (which I already owned and used to served as end tables in my bedroom).
