Were you thinking of granite or laminate? If you live where there is a stone yard for granite, visit and pick out your own slab for the counter. Take the backsplash tiles with you.

Have you considered taupe- or coffee-colored countertops? Brown tones go beautifully with blues and aquas and other wood tones (floors).
