I agree your home is the dogs home. Not outside.

When I was growing up, my dad made our dog a house that looked just like our main house. He never went it it, not even to protect him from the sun.

Many dogs enjoy jumping on top of the house, it gives them a better view of things.

Ours is happy with "our" house & the bed, couch, lap (even if she's not lap dog size) etc etc.

I am positive that dogs believe 2 things, they are all lap dog size and they can get the better of anyone who even looks crooked at their family.

Wow. Sounds like a lot of lazy dogs out there. I enjoy being outside and my dogs do too. They love the sunshine and romp and play while I work. I built a dog house for a place for them to rest and be safe when I'm on a tractor or using chainsaw, etc. have to admit not one has ever spent the night in it. Yes, they are strung out all over the house. Most of the time I can't find a place to sit to relax at night with them taking up the whole couch, including pillow backs. They do make a good head rest! How could I make this guy get of my couch?

In regards to those who feel they cannot house their pup in their home, or that they need to be outside while humans are gone. I offer 2 considerations. first they used to give houses pitched roofs to make them cooler. Second, I knew a woman with Dalmations. when she left for work and a storm was coming they would leap on to their flat roofed dog house, from there leap over 10' to the roof of the garage and then leap down on the other side of the fence. Took her years just to figure out how they got out.

Pointed, maybe add a skylight. If located in a cold climate , add electricity for a contractor bulb for heat.

The dog house style should coordinate with the style of your house. I would choose colors and styles to match my house if I had outdoor space for one. I don't have a yard, so a dog house is not an option. My current dog likes to be where the people are so he wants to sleep in our room. But my former dog (same breed, golden retriever) loved to be outdoors and he would have loved to hang out in the back yard and have a dog house. His favorite place to sleep was my balcony. I would never force a dog to sleep outside - but dogs have different personalities and some really like to be outside (at least some of the time).
