The cabinet boxes were finished in place, the doors and drawer front were taken off site for finishing. I use a waterborne finishing system and a two part urethane conversion varnish top coat that is also waterborne

If you don't mind me derailing the thread a bit..

I had a new kitchen custom made for this house and it's gorgeous, but the paint job stinks. It was new wood with the lightest of coats of oil based primer followed by 2 coats of Sherwin Williams oil based paint.

They began showing wear within three months of completion.

Fast forward to now.

We just purchased a new (to us) home in Ohio. I haven't seen the cabs in person yet, but if the boxes are in good shape, I want to paint them (that color up there ^^ ). BUT I don't want to see the wear like I'm seeing in my current kitchen.

What sort of process needs to be done to get optimum, lasting results? I'm seriously unhappy that the custom kitchen I put in in 2015 looks like it's been here for five years. :(

When you are repainting existing cabinets you need to make sure they are throughly cleaned and and sanded. If it's a non bleeding wood prime with a urithane acrylic bonding primer like XIM's UMA primer. Then you can coat them with a waterborne acrylic lacquer or PPG's Breakthrough. Then top coat with a durable clear protective coating. I like General finishes waterborne conversion varnish or their Enduro Poly. This system will last for years.

This was the system used on the cabinets above.

Note: spray finishes for best results.

It was the top coat that was missing. I knew (later) I really should have asked about their method. I really prefer oil based paints. Could this sort of finish be had with oil based?

Right now I've no idea what's in the kitchen. I bought it sight unseen, so it could be a real surprise. Right now it looks like someone tried to stain the wood over an existing stain and it really didn't work.
