Cherry cabinets! White is just a trend that is soon fading out. I love classic designs and cherry is one of my favorite woods for cabinets. But, if you were leaning towards white, why don't you just paint your existing cabinets white rather than install new ones?

If you are doing a complete remodel for your kitchen with brand new cabinets I would go with cherry in a clear coat finish (as cherry will darken with age) and also do flat panel inset doors. This looks fantastic and will look great for a long time. If you are wanting to do a face lift I would paint your existing cabinets with new doors and crown. If your budget allows you could also hire a cabinetmaker to fill the space above the existing cabinets with more cabinetry with glass doors and lighting.

What is the style of your home? What colors do you use now in major upholstery or accents / art? Cherry would be the preference if you have a certain kind of architecture, some heritage elements and lots of natural light. Otherwise, white is always right - it will never be dated, though there are some cabinet door styles that are more timeless than others.

Treat the lower cabinets as furniture: make them walnut. Leave the upper white, but consider hardware change in both cases.
Leave the floor alone. After all, do you change the living or dining room floor if you change furniture?!?

I have a white kitchen 25 years old, we just added brushed nickel knobs and pulls, it looks brand new. ps we painted it as well.

I think white is always in style (gray is the current trend that will soon pass, in my opinion). Although cherry can also be "timeless" in the right house. I wouldn't replace a hardwood floor, or are you just thinking of restaining? I wouldn't go too dark, because that's also a trend that is waning. Thankfully, my refinisher talked me out of espresso 5 years ago. I personally think that the mixed cabinet finishes are a trend, unless it's just the island that's different.

Make sure you get a nice, durable finish on your cabinets if you do choose painted. Our current home had white cabinets that didn't hold up to regular use and I ended up stripping them and staining and glazing them. They're lovely, but I miss my white cabinets that were classic 20 years ago and still are. All that being said, it's your home and you need to like what you see everyday.

I updated our kitchen which had white cabinets to a better quality white cabinets! Still love the look- 18 years in this home. So crisp and still goes with all styles of furniture.

Since there is no window I would go with white cabinets. Cherry would make the room look closed in and dark.

In your shoes, I vote light - no window would do that for me. I would keep my existing cabinets and countertops have them painted off white and antiqued a tad to show off the gorgeous carvings etc. - a tone geared towards my floors undertone. Here's a kitchen like that in sw wool skein . . you would think this was a soft white, eh?? but look how it meshes with the white crown and ceiling? You can always do the island in rubbed black or an accent color - click into this kitchen to see the blue green island (sw riverway) If you go white white on these cabinets I think you will lose some of their charm ..

I agree that white will always be a classic and that it's gray that will look dated in a few years. My vote would be to replace your cabinets (the style of the current ones is a bit dated) with white ones and either refinish or replace the floor with a medium brown. All the best with your project!
