Personally I would paint them white....tonight :). I am not a fan of flush doors but they are doable when they are painted . Your hallway will be so much brighter and fresher with white doors.

new if you have the budget... paint to match the trim if you don't. If you hate the flat door then you could add moulding before you paint for more detail.

I think you can get new hollow-core paneled doors for a reasonable price at Home Depot or Lowes.

Your comments reflect my predicament - all good options. What are your thoughts on painting a color slightly mixed between wall and trim? (so not exact as trim) that way it wouldn't be SO white in the hall.

It's typical to paint all interior doors the same color as the trim. To do otherwise will just bring unnecessary attention to them. That's what you should do. No question.

I think you need them to be white. The hall needs to be brightened up and the doors should match the trim. I think it always looks bad when people do doors different from trim. I would paint them and see how that looks, and if you don't really like it, get new doors. They aren't really expensive and I just hate those old flat doors. But keep it all white.

Our hallway looks identical to yours. We just painted our hallway a light tan and have painted all the trim and jambs white. We've painted half the flat brown doors white so far and it's a total mess. We primed and did 2 coats of paint, but now the doors are sticky and no longer close properly with the extra thickness from the paint, and they're chipping where they rub on the jambs. Honestly I like the look of the brown doors that we haven't painted yet against the new white trim than the white ones. We're committed to finishing, but I regret painting the doors white. We will probably have to buy new doors. I think you should first paint the inside door jambs and see how you like that look.

I think your door jambs should be painted white too, but leave the doors wood tone.

See how much better that white looks. If thickness of paint and closing doors is a problem, just get new doors.

Get new doors. Even though they are wood, they are very dated.

I would like to know if people have replaced doors without removing door trim and replacing the door jam.

I replaced my hollow core doors many years ago - just replaced doors.

I had pretty much the same hallway when we moved in!! we painted trim white and painted walls. I had hollow core, flat, boring wood doors. we have had other improvements so haven't replaced doors yet, but this was my "quick fix," painted black and added piece of wood for a little more dimension. I did have them white but for some reason I wanted to try something different and used black. :) it was easy!

I also added the pieces of trim above the door, as we had small trim. I wanted a little more substance to the trim and it has def helped w the overall look. Good luck :)

ckar8. Are your doors closing properly since painting them? Any problems with chipping or rubbing on the jambs? And did you take doors off to paint?

no issues on closing. Mild rubbing on top when it rubs against the jam. I did not remove door. we will replace doors eventually, but this def helped me cope short term. I think we will do white when we replace w nicer doors but the black has kind of grown on me!!
