Help with formal dining room!

This is an antique dining table that has been in my husband's family for i believe 5 generations. It has leaves so it extends to a 6 seater.
I need help with "fixing" this room making the table the centerpiece. Also, i fell in love with the chandelier and would like to incorporate it. Basically the only old/antique/heirloom item i want in this room is the table. Would like to mix with my more contemporary style. Thanks!!

Beautiful table! The paint scheme looks more traditional so I would think about all one color or add some bold wallpaper. If you paint you could add geometric print curtains, a colorful rug and a sleek sideboard with a chair on each side with a modern , funky mirror. You could really use any chairs that you like. The chandelier is great- it will be a beautiful room when complete.

Consider adding tall-back, clean lined upholstered chairs. They would be nice with linen draperies to the floor. I'm not crazy about the wainscoting color unless you add some patterned wallpaper to the upper walls. The lower wall color is nice but find it heavy with the upper wall color. I know you're in process but want you on the right track.

Love the table, not crazy about the color scheme and chair rail. What are the options for the walls?

Also, without knowing the exact size of the room and table, the large fixture might be too large and the small fixture too small. Please advise on sizes of room and table.

    Large: 35"H X 29" Diameter with 7" Diam Canopy, 15"L Rod & 6'L Chain

    Small: 23 1/2"H X 23" Diameter with 7" Diam Canopy, 8"L Rod & 6'L Chain

Nandina, in the 1st picture, is that a baker's rack? They're offering is one that goes with the dining table but i wasn't sure what it's for.
To be honest, im not a fan of wallpaper. I do want to paint that part that's orange to a different color or do something with it but im not sure?

We posted at the same time Beverly. I will go measure the room give me a sec.

Put an eclectic mix of B&W photos

Rough measurement of the room is 141" x 127"

These are dimensions of 3 sizes of the light fixture:

I love your table but I would definitely get rid of the chair rail and repaint the room. The table is very elegant while the chair rail and the color scheme make the room feel country casual.

Is it a lot of work to get rid of the rail? I certainly don't want anything to look or feel country in the home!!! Yes i did post above i will be painting the whole room probably the same color as the formal living room across the hall from it.

I guess it depends on how handy you are - the rail needs to be pulled off and the walls will need to be repaired prior to painting.

What is the color of your living room? Are you planning to put any other furniture in the room (a sideboard or a buffet?)

Beautiful heirloom! I would recommend going for a rectangular rug. Round rugs do look great under round tables but because your room in enclosed I think you would be better suited with a rectangular rug. With your dimensions the biggest rug you can go with is about 9'5"x10'75.

I personally like the chair rail but would paint underneath color white.

What type of color scheme are you looking for?

like izeve said, you'll have to pull it off and repair the wall. Chair rails are on the traditional side, but they are not exclusively country. If you paint the underneath white, I think it will help the traditional table tie in with your more contemporary finishings

Your table and chandelier are beautiful and elegant. I would repaint the room to a neutral color and add contemporary or eclectic art to the walls. It will be a beautiful room!

I am also in love with your huge windows!

All of the living room is that ugly orange color and im going to paint it a light greige color or even white. Or paint it the top paint of the dining room. To open up the space more. Got some great ideas regarding the living room in a post i made for it. I plan to add another piece of furniture just not sure yet. We dont plan to use the room until November. Just moved in about 3 weeks ago so i want to take my time.

Rugknots, thanks for your help with the rug suggestion. It seems like removing the chair rail is a lot of work and i doubt my husband would be agreement. He is somewhat of a countryboy err man :) Im looking for a neutral color scheme and i reallly really like gold, browns, creams etc. Not sure what accent color would work in the room yet.

So keep top part color and paint bottom part white? Also, is it ok to have the both rooms separate colors or should they be the same color? When you come in the front door, they're on either side of the door.

No problem! Because you liked the blue colored chairs and Beverly's most recent chairs, what if you used this rug that features a similar blue color and the chairs Beverly suggested?

    Would this chandelier work?
Don't remove the chair rail! If you want to de-emphasis it simply paint it the same color as your wall; only use a higher sheen paint. It is a nice detail in this room and who knows , you may change your mind down the road. I like your original chandelier but have seen them with crystal, I think this room could use some. If you paint the walls all one color it will look more contemporary . Soft, cream semi- sheer drapes at the Windows would look lovely.

Love the chandelier! Ive seen them with the crystals also but all the ones in my budget are too small(16" diameter or smaller) :(

The current one is 22" and the table is massive when expanded. i read somewhere that the light fixture should be about a third of the table?

Hi Renee, not sure what your budget is, found these 24" ones at a good price. There are a lot out there, you really have to shop!
