I would choose a double bed. Unless he is really tall, then go queen.

Of course you could go with a twin or a tallboy twin.

Try an upholstered headboard in a dark color that won't show stains. Chocolate and darker browns would go well. Then ask your teen to pick out a washable comforter (one that will fit in your washer) or comforter cover with tan in the pattern somewhere. It will need to be replaced in two or three years.
