Need help deciding between Induction single vs. Electric/Gas Double

Hi all-

I've searched the forums and read a ton of threads about induction. I am having a house built, and I have to get a freestanding (not a slide-in) range. I also have to have an over the range microwave as my hood. My wife wants to go back to a gas range (we've had smooth top electric for 16 years) and I like the electric, as I don't have a sense of smell, so I'm always paranoid about gas fumes. Probably unfounded, as I has a gas range growing up for 20+ years.

Anyway, the freestanding induction range choices are limited. I originally wanted the Samsung "97" model, but people have scared me off with reliability. I'm hoping that GE might be better, and their freestanding model looks nice, other than too much grey.

Unfortunately, I was hoping for a double oven, but that looks like it ca only happen with a gas or smooth electric. My big decision is (freestanding) induction with a single oven vs. a gas or electric double oven. Reliability is important, so I'm a little worried about going induction, but I like the idea since it's a small galley kitchen with only a micro hood.

We don't host major holiday meals, we're a family of 4. Most dinners are on the stovetop, with the oven getting used 2-3 times a week. But when I do get baking, It seems like it would be nice to have two temps.

Also, there are two time a year where I need to have 3 pots boiling at once. I was able to do that on my 15 year old GE smooth top, I read somewhere that induction might not allow this?

So, Induction one oven - GE or Samsung, or Electric/Gas Double Oven, also GE/Samsung?

You can boil water on all the burners at once on an induction cooktop - the only thing you can't do is use the 'boost' function on more than one of the linked hobs at a time (for example, I have 4 hobs, 2 sets of 2. You can only use "boost" on two at a time, but you can set the others to "9").

And most of the time you won't be using boost anyway. I would post your question in the appliance forum where the experts can help you and maybe offer some suggestions.

Also who does most of the cooking?

Why the need for a free standing unit?

Have you considered an under counter micro drawer unit?

I've have a Samsung induction chef duo; oven can be separated into two ovens. My kitchen is not completed yet so I have not been able to try it out despite having it for quite a while now. I understand the gas thing, and although I really enjoyed cooking, heating and clothes drying with gas for years, I am relieved to be away from gas lines and looking forward to trying my free-standing slide-in-look range. Eventually.

Thanks! I'm glad to know I can do the three burners for my annual Chinese New Year Dumpling-Fest. I do most of the cooking due to our work schedules, but she makes better stuff when it's her turn... My CG said something about our cabinets that we are getting won't work for a slide-in. It's a really small galley. I figure someday on the next range I can test that theory, but I'll follow directions this time. I will post up on the appliance forum too. I would have loved to get that Samsung Flex duo slide-in.

I have a small galley too with a fairly new Samsung induction chef duo, like gramarows. I'd pin down your GC to explain the freestanding restriction in terms of the actual range/specs you want, so it makes sense to you. I love my range.

Since you're having an OTR microwave instead of a venting hood that would be another reason, IMO, to go with induction over gas. Your cooktop will emit little heat and no gas fumes.

I love my Samsung induction range.

My sis has a Whirlpool freestanding induction with double ovens and she loves it but says one of the ovens is somewhat inadequate. I adore my induction, and I would never, ever go back to gas. Never. Have you considered supplementing with a Breville oven? That is what everyone here encouraged me to do, and I have found it to be an amazing appliance. Good luck.

Hi MizLizzie - I saw that Whirlpool online. It seems that it would solve my double oven dilemma. Has your sister had any issues with it? I have no idea which brands are reliable these days. All of the stuff in our house was 16 years old, and actually going strong - kenmore, GE and believe it or not, Magic Chef!

The GE profile slide-ins have a little lip that sits above the counter. However, as I recall the double oven GE cafe slide-ins just slide into the opening - there aren't any parts that are supposed to sit over the counter.

So if your reason for not using a slide in is counter-top related, maybe the Cafes will work. That won't help you with finding a double-oven induction model - I think Cafe didn't have an induction model. But the Cafe series does have a double-oven gas version (CGS990SETSS).

Just something to know as you compare options.

Trent, if budget permits, you would be much better served by a Bosch induction range and a medium or large Breville on the side. The large Breville has convection, and will easily serve a small family. (We save so much energy not firing up the big oven.) Yes, the Bosch is technically a slide-in but it has a back plate you can purchase a la carte to fill the whole space. My next-door neighbor has it, and is ecstatically happy. That said, it will run you about $1K more than the Whirlpool.

I emailed my BIL to find out how the Whirlpool is working out these days, and he says that they love, love, love the stovetop, but the ovens will often burn things they ought not. (My sis and my BIL are world class chefs, no lie.) Also, he says the whole thing will on rare occasion shut down if they run both ovens and the stovetop. This happened within the first month of ownership. Other folks on the AF have remarked this issue as well, IIRC.

Bear in mind my sis has had this range almost two years now. Bosch didn't have one on the market when she bought. Possibly Whirlpool has fixed the shutdown issue. But Bosch has been making induction for probably a quarter century, and make an excellent mid price range; high-end guts without the $$$ label. The Whirlpool, it seems to me, will be a compromise at best. Good luck!

I would love that Bosch, or the Samsung Slide-in. But with other things going into the house, I'll have to scale it back a little this round. I'm pretty much down to the GE freestanding induction, or back to electric smooth top with the Samsung Flex Duo with the dual door. I'm leaning induction still, as I'm sure I use the cooktop more than I would a second oven, but it seems so convenient to have one. Thanks!
