Dimmer switch to flip switch, but with problems...

My dining room light has a dimmer, and I want to switch the dimmer to a flip switch. The junction box has a red, black, and white wire (1958 house). The dimmer used the black and white wires only - the red was capped. However, this light is on a circuit that controls lighting and power in the garage. When I put in a flip switch, I first tried the black at the top and white at the bottom (like the dimmer was wired) - but the circuit breaker came on. Then I tried two blacks (top and bottom), and it worked - BUT, when the dining room light is off, so is all the power in the garage. What do I need to do to wire a flip switch where the dimmer was, and keep power to the garage when the dining room light is off?
