Remove some brick, lower mantle for TV mount

Hello,

I am hoping someone might be able to provide some insight into whether this idea is possible.

i bought a home two years ago that was built in 1994.

The fireplace is the focal point in the room, and we would like to mount our TV above the fireplace. The fireplace we have is a brick wood burning fireplace; however, the previous homeowners had a propane fireplace insert installed.

Unfortunately, the brick mantle is 7-8 bricks above the insert. If I were to mount my 50 inch plasma TV above the fireplace mantle, it would be touching the ceiling.

If the mantle & the top 3-4 layers of the "stepped" brick were removed, there would be enough room to mount the TV. Is this an option?
