Interior decorator said this room is impossible! Can you help?

A small guest room with a 38"x26" hitch in the wall next to the bed. Attractively filling the space is a challenge in that a chest of drawers could make the room heavy when adding a nightstand on the other side of the bed. The bed placement is the only option as the room size is limited. Would like to go coastal/nautical in decorating.

Why do you automatically assume that the shelving would be brown? ''Floating'' shelves, with a lower one at desk height, would be perfect for the alcove. Tuck a small backless chair underneath, and you have the perfect spot for a laptop and a lamp.

I agree, Sophie! We converted a closet to an office and were able to put in floating shelves. I haven't seen it in person, obviously, but an interior decorator who says it is impossible? Doesn't she/he like a challenge? I think it's a nice little room. Good luck!
