How high is the ceiling? How tall are the cabinet doors on the top section?

What's more important are the ceiling heights in your kitchen.

If your ceilings are typical, they're roughly 8' high, which means that after accounting for a 36" high countertop, and 18" clearance between the counter and the bottom of your upper cabinets, you have space for 42" upper units maximum.
If your ceiling is 9' high, you have space for 54" upper units.

This home is over 100 years old and the ceilings are 12 feet high. We were actually trying to mask the fact that they are so high so we created all the molding and bulkhead. I believe the upper cabinets were 42 and then we added the molding for drama.
