starting rosemary

I live in WI and had a rosemary plant I managed to keep growing over the winter in the house for three years. This December it dried up. I would like to start a new plant but have heard it is hard to do indoors. If I start from seed do I try for only one plant or can I have more in one container? (how do I sew the seeds?) It will be at least May before I could keep it outside but indoors I do have a nice sunny southeast window. I have always bought a plant in spring and used that but I would like to get an early start. No plants would be available here at this time.
