This is beautiful. With all the neutral colours you have so many choices. I would start shopping for a coffee table, bigger than the one you have. You can match up with the colour of the legs on your chairs for a traditional look in espresso, but I think contemporary style would also look very nice. Go to the stores and see what you like then post some photos. I would also start searching for some large art prints for the walls. This is the perfect time to shop around because you are starting with a clean slate. Take your time and bring home prints on approval. Many stores will let you take the art home and bring it back if it's not suitable. Are you thinking about drapes for the windows or blinds?

Possibly curtains for the windows but I want to make sure they aren't heavy since I don't want to take away any of the natural light.

What is the feeling you want from the room? Your first purchase should be a rug or the art for over FP. That will be the jumping off point for your room. It may take bringing several rugs home and trying them before you hit on "the one". What are the dimensions of the room? You may need a 9x12 rug. I don't see yellow as being the "pop" is this lovely neutral room but depending on rug or art it maybe. Decorating is a process, piece by piece not just buying without trying it out with what you already have.

I like your rug colors and design, but I think you're right, bigger would be better. I understand what you're thinking about bringing in yellow, but you're doing such a good job staying with the blues and neutrals that I'm not sure you need yellow in this room. Perhaps just some yellow accents in your foyer would be enough to connect your inside and your outside. If you aren't sure about curtains/drapes, perhaps you'd be happy with Roman shades. You can leave them down just a little to show the fabric, so very little light is blocked.

The room is 13.5x23. So if I don't do yellow what kind of throw pillows would you suggest? So the other side of the house is where the family room and playroom are....I was intending to make this room the more formal adult room but also a place that's relaxing since the other side is kid zone! This is why I chose to paint the walls blue and stick with calming/light colors.

With those nice puffy pillow backs on your sofa, do you need throw pillows? I think they might just get in the way when people want to sit down. Perhaps instead a nice light blue (or blue and cream and neutral mixed) throw tossed over the corner of the sofa would be better than pillows.

If your couch is slipcovered don't worry about protection, they wash like a charm. Sofa table with two lamps would be great. Best idea is to have a full plan with pictures and swatches of everything before you buy. Multiple choices mix and match. I.e. Patterned draperies, solid or texture will impact other decisions. Rug choice could also be a starting point or not. Look on houzz for rooms with blue walls to get an idea of color schemes. You may even end up with a different floor plan. Doing it piecemeal makes it harder and ends up limiting choices. You have a great start with neutral pieces and will get lots of specific helpful advice.

Here are my initial thoughts

you want a wow factor? You MUST add more contrast and more drama to the room. First I repainting the fireplace to make it a more substantial single built-in appearance. This could be done in other colors or tile if desired.

- new, bigger rug - I did not import a selection to the rendering. I will provide suggestions separately. Selecting something that is warm tones. avoid the matchy blues.

- new table (that one belongs on my porch) - I liked the idea of adding brightness to the room through stone and warmth into the room with bronze.

- sofa table? (there is a good amount of space behind the couch) -My idea was to replace s traditional sofa table with a working desk. This table can hold your sofa lamps. There is also plenty of room for a modest upholstered dining chair or desk chair.

-extra seating and/or bench in front of one of the end windows? - If you don't do the dest, Another thought is a small table with two chairs facing one another near the window.

- something above fireplace - I selected this stunning metal mirror made by Arteriors. I have upped the materials in your room from upholstery only to now include metal, stone, mirror, glass, wood and fabric. This prevents the room from looking stiff or too texturally 'matchy'

- artwork on blank wall - I would suggest two small custom artworks that mean something to you. Try shopping on ETSY for something that speaks to you.

Huge starburst mirror above fireplace... Old coffee table painted canary yellow. Patterned curtains that pull all of the colors together. Throw pillows. You don't need that much, it's already cute. I personally don't mind the rug. Good luck :)

I would change the wall color to light gray that way you could bring pops of color like yellow that your thinking about and drapery panels that are fixed on each side of the windows and throw pillows that give pops of yellow color as well. Nice room and furniture!

In my opinion, if you want a wow factor, and some yellow, get an antique mirror over the fireplace: it's timeless, is easy to mix with more modern decor, can be very impressive, makes a room look bigger and should work nicely with the Georgian windows/ traditional style of the room. But when i say antique, i mean antique antique, as in go to an antique mall or go online and look for an overmantle from the 19th century, they're everywhere and have made a comeback as people realized how cool they can look, in my opinion this option is way better than spending a few bucks on a trendy mirror you'll only appreciate for a few years. All in all, great space though

I like the latest ideas above.....but for me a WOW would be the largest appropriate splash of color oil or print......

Looking at your ideabooks, I think you love blue, so I'd dig into that, plus your smoky gray and top it off with lots of silver, and perhaps some mirrored furniture for a bit of femininity.

Mirrored coffee table. Plenty of lighting in different areas. Reface fireplace... floor to ceiling stone (white). A wild throw at one end of the couch. Lots of sparkley metal. I liked the 3 tone drapes too. A table at far window and another comfy chair in that corner. Wood accents that match your floors too! That will warm the cool gray palette you have going.

There is a lot to love about the room already. I would be keen to see the sofa facing the fire, and the rug turned around. Then find some art you love, and pick out a color in that to use as an accent with drapes throw pillows or blankets. Here's a room I love with great accents ... but I am not suggesting the red for you. Really like the wing backs. Consider a pair of small, light gray storage ottomans -- one for each wingback -- in lieu of a coffee table.

[If you're keeping the coffee table in this room rather than repurposing it to the porch and leaving your chairs where they are, then you might see if your coffee table fits lengthwise between your two chairs.]

To get more seating, you may need to move back your sofa and move the seating across from it back farther as well. You could put a love seat across from your sofa and put your chairs across from and mostly facing your fireplace with a small table in the space between each chair and the sofa or love seat beside it. You should do this before choosing a new rug so you know the size you need.

You have floor vents that will limit what you can do at your windows behind the sofa (and elsewhere in the room as well), but you might consider a adding a sofa table under those windows that will not impede the air flow from the vent.

Your rug looks great so you should repurpose it if you can. Will it fit in the space behind where the two wingback chairs now are, to define a separate space such as a dining space or an office nook.

Don't rush to put art on the walls -- better to leave them blank until you find something you truly like. Don't clutter your mantel with stuff. One really great piece of art is sufficient. Don't see a tv in the room. Will it be going above the fireplace.

With your colors, you could use gray drapes or a pattern with a background color as close as possible to either your sofa or your chairs and the color you seek to add.

Your room has a crisp fresh look; don't muck that up with drag-the-floor sloppy look drapes. If privacy is a concern, get lined drapes and/or add white mini blinds beneath them; alternately, you could also use a double rod so you can add sheers behind the drapes. Have your rods longer than your windows are wide so that, when open, the drapes cover the frame of the window but let all that great natural light through.

The windows need floor-to-ceiling lined drapes. A large mirror or piece of framed art would make the fireplace more of an anchor. Try to find a narrowish arm-height table to go between the chairs, and definitely use the sofa table. Paint the shutter doors to match the walls, then use a darker blue for the baseboards (actually, remove the baseboards and reinstall them above 1"x6" boards and new quarter round).
Use a pair of lamps on the sofa table and a floor lamp behind the table between the chairs. Lamps are important because they light the ceiling and make the room more welcoming.
The chairs and sofa should sit entirely on the new rug.

wow! I really like the room. I think:

1. adding wainscoting in white as tall as the fireplace will make the room appear fuller.

2. adding a modern-classical-vintage style chandelier will make it 'wow'

3. The rugs, need to be a more bigger rug. This one is beautiful, but too small.

4. Add a mirror (gold) on the fireplace wall.

5. Add a table, near the window and add vintage oriental look porcelains in blue & white theme, houseplants, hexagonal terrariums etc.

6. The 3 seated sofa, should be facing the fireplace. And add a blue & white pillows. The other sofa should be just one on the left, and one on the right.

7. add curtains for all.

Dressing the windows with woven wood shades would look great, and would provide privacy when needed. These shades would work perfectly with your decor, as it is light and airy.

To get a "WOW" reaction, I think you need to introduce a bold color. Consider adding a bold blue to your colors. I'd also get a bolder bigger rug, and turn it 90º. Put your sofa facing the fireplace, add your gray chairs on either side of the fireplace. This will give you a more open space by the fireplace, and use your room a bit more. Start with a rug you love. Perhaps something along these lines? First find a rug. Then worry about your curtains and any other furniture you might want to fill in the corners.

First thing that struck me: if you want drama, then we need to address the fireplace. It is small and rather underwhelming. If budget allows, see about doing a different surround. Limestone would be wonderful.

You could go a little whimsical with the fireplace. It is the focal point and we need to play it up. A local craftsman could make a larger surround.

Pcmom1 - the fireplace is actually electric so I'm not sure what my options would be in making it stand out more. I suppose I could add those stick on tiles somehow...? But there is limited room to put them...really only along the top strip above the black glass....not on all three sides like the picture above. I do like that idea though. I had no focal point in the room so I went with the fake fireplace. I'm so glad it's not obviously fake!! I was hesitant about getting one. Our real one is in the family room.

For those of you who mentioned turning the couch....I felt that the walking space behind the couch was a bit tight. It left a strange narrow space. Andthe view from the shutter doors (kitchen view) wasn't as appealing. The last two pics are a comparison of the different views.

Though I am usually an advocate of the largest piece of furniture (usually the sofa) facing the focal point, I like your living room as originally arranged better.

Great job so far! You can even add white curtains or curtains of other colors. It does not have to be blue, don't be afraid to add some color for that wow factor!

I would keep layering in more white...with a touch of chrome or silver....beautiful space.....I would continue with the soft subtle colors...light blue,gray,white,cream it is so calming and sophisticated.

Just a small suggestion...I noticed your fireplace is not attached to the wall...it will look better if you remove the baseboard behind it so that it lays flat against the wall and looks built in...:)

would Love an update on your space!

I would add board 'n batten to the walls.... 3/4 up the wall. Paint it out white but leave your existing colors above. A much larger coffee table. Something in a reclaimed wood in a warm tone. Maybe some match stick toll up Blinds for the windows also in a warm brown to offset the cool white. I'd be beefing up that fireplace making it appear wider and run it yo the ceiling. Any artwork you hang on the walls will pop against the white walls. A couple of throw blankets in a buff color. Something with texture. Accent lighting in black. paint doors in black too. You would definitely have the WOW FACTOR you are looking for.

The insides... would reflect the outside. White with rich wood tones and black accents.
