Consider painting the shelving a lighter or darker shade of your wall color. Paint the backs of the shelving in an accent color to add interest. If this still feels to modern, consider adding a trim detail on the cap that compliments other trim details in the space.

I love how you have mixed modern and traditional elements here to create a more eclectic look in your room. However, I think your bookcases need a bit of work in terms of how you arrange your items. First, because they are so thick and white, you need to add some more colorful accessories so that your accessories don't get lost on the shelves (the way, for example, your white glasses on those top few shelves seem to). It appears that you need some storage in the bottom shelves for children's books and toys. I would recommend buying some boxes in a nice colorful print to be functional and to give some contrast with color. You should also consider adding some color through artwork. For a budget-friendly option, I would check out http://www.etsy.com/shop/monkeybeeswax which has bright art prints in a variety of colors. Right now your bookcase stands out because it is white. To disguise it, you must paint it either the same shade or a lighter/dareker shade of the wall. You can add trim to it to give it an old world style ie: fluted sides, arched top. To add interest, you can wallpaper the back wall in a complimentary shade/pattern. You can also add doors to the bottom or even put baskets in the cubby holes. I've attached a picture for you to look at. I hope this helps.

I think the shelves are quite attractive, actually. They also serve a great function. I wouldn't remove them. This would be costly and messy. I would make the room fit them instead. If the fireplace unit which sits between them is to remain, it needs to blend. Here's what I would do: Select a classic color of paint and paint out the center unit to match the shelves. Obviously the dark tiles will have to stay, but the oak can be painted. Paint the brass black to blend with the tiles. Update the furniture with slip covers in a more neutral shade, then add color with accents like blankets, a rug or pillows. I have attached a pic of a similar shelving/fireplace arrangement. I agree with @butlera, I wouldn't remove these, once painted similar color to your walls, they will blend in. They are modern as can be. Great place to merchandise with books, collectables, baskets, etc.
