I think you should sit down with a kitchen designer and look at how you can use the entire space. For a preliminary discussion, just draw up the area to scale on graph paper as a reference. This will be good enough for preliminary planning although before anything is ordered, a professional measurement needs to be done.

I agree with Cynthia, a kitchen designer will be able to go over several options for you, especially with dimensions to work off of. However some things to contemplate before you go to a showroom:

What do you currently use the space for now?
How do you use your kitchen? Multiple cooks that are on top of each other that a larger kitchen will be very beneficial? A dining area is something you desperately need? Maybe a pantry/storage area?
Is that sink your only sink and if so, can you move the plumbing easily?
What would your dream kitchen look like and how would it operate? (This question especially will help to determine the best solution to that area!)

Looking at the picture, it appears you are using the back area as part of the kitchen and if that is the case I'd definitely consider taking the peninsula out so that becomes part of the kitchen and the flow. Especially if that is your refrigerator in the corner your work triangle is completely broken up and I imagine makes cooking a bit of a pain!

Can you give us more pictures of the areas? What is in front of the kitchen? Side? Back? Your kitchen kind-of looks like my original kitchen that the builder had. Look at my design. Before/after. I designed it myself. I'd be glad to help you with ideas.
