Quite the jungle! I would start by removing all the plant material in the area near the house and starting new. Can't tell from the photos if there is a patio there or not, but you should have your entertaining space close to the house. The patio should be large enough to fit whatever it is you like doing outside ie. dining, lounging, barbecuing etc. Surround the patio with shrubs, perennials and grasses (use native plant material, or match the plants to the garden around the pergola)

Between the patio and your pergola you should have nothing but lawn. This will allow you to enjoy the view from the patio. Move the garden statuary off the lawn and into a plantbed; try it in different spots and stand back to find the perfect space.

The side with no garage could be lined with a hedge to give you some privacy and define your backyard (Cedar, Beech or Hornbeam). The side with the garage could use the same treatment, or you could plant a vine to cover up the wall of the garage.

I like the pergola and surrounding gardens, it looks very natural almost like a ruins garden. Maybe some weeding, replacing rotten timbers, and a fresh coat of paint never hurt anyone! Best of luck!
