$6,000! That won't get you very much for so many new cabinets. Maybe new doors.

I think you'll have to revise either the budget range or the scope of work to fit. Check your local big box stores to see if they do free designs and estimates (some do, some don't).

I agree even Ikea would be hard to get in for 6000.00 and they would be much better quality than anything else for that price.

That will be very tight especially since it will include countertops. Are you looking at wood cabinets or painted cabinets?

We did an inexpensive change out of cabinets 19 years ago. We did not move anything, did laminate countertops and a new sink - No new appliances till needed. I think cabinets/counter/sink plus labor was $7000.

Look into having the cabinets refaced with new doors - usually less expensive.

When you do change the cabinets, consider a microwave shelf cabinet to the right of the stove and getting a dedicated hood for the stove. This is not necessary, but usually provides for better venting and less congestion around the stove when cooking.

Do look around at different styles and prices. You may find you want to save up a little longer to get the kitchen you want. It took me two years to save up for my new counters - presently waiting to be installed.

You're right. Going with reface. I like med brown maple doors, full overlay, Glass door in the corner top. Also steel undermount sink, and a new dishwasher. Can get it for less than $6000. Yeah! Help me with a laminate countertop. I've been looking at cappuccino. Is that too dark? Then what color appliances, which I will get 1 at a time?

You will have difficulty I think with an under mount sink and laminate counters. I've heard it can be done, but I've also heard it can fail, leading to damage to the counters around the sink area - just look into it well. Otherwise, just do a top mount, or save up two more years for quartz/granite like me:)

I believe you could reface the cabinets now and still do countertops later.

Where is your fridge - next to the dishwasher or on another wall?

I just want different than what I've been looking at forever. But on the top, I could change my mind everyday

If you go with a countertop with movement - and most of them have movement, some more subtle than others, make sure you keep any backsplash - if you are doing one - very simple. Movement in countertop and backsplash, even if both are individually very pretty, can be too much visually and result in a muddle.

Refacing will cost more than 6K unless you do all of the measuring, ordering, finishing, and installation labor yourself. I quote and sell it regularly. There is almost no savings over full replacement costs. Paying someone to do yours, I would ballpark it at twice your stated budget.

Where refacing works is where the cabinets have good components, like a great layout, with high quality construction, such as fully adjustable shelving, good quality drawer construction with high quality soft close glides, and a lot of internal organizers. And the customers have also invested a lot of money into an expensive counter top like granite or Quartz.

Your cabinets are not a good candidate for refacing. You would get much more functional improvement and better end results investing that into new cabinets.

Or, if your budget is firm, have those painted now and do other changes over time. That is usually in the 4-6K realm. New laminate tops would be 2-3K, installed by a professional. A new sink (NOT undermount) would be in the $500-$900 range. New knobs and pulls in th $200-600 range. New floors in the 3K-10K realm.

If you are handy enough to DIY all of that, then you just saved yourself plenty. Even so, I would make an ultimate plan that involved replacing those cabinets with more functional ones and limit the dollars invested now to paint and sweat.

For your budget you would get more bang for your buck if you take down wallpaper, paint cabinets, new counters and new LIGHTING (including under cabinet lights).

You have 1/10th the budget that is spent on the national average kitchen remodel. Look into a HELOC or store financing to help you stretch your budget if you want to get something better quality and more functional.

Or, focus on simple DIY things that you can accomplish yourself. Painting the cabinets isn't simple, nor easy. But it is well within an experienced DIYers capabilities if they have the long time line to do a good job.

The floor is the next culprit. I'd look at some of the snap together vinyl tiles. Lots of wood look choices that can bring some warmth to the space that you will be erasing when you go with painted cabinets.

Then the counters. A basic granite isn't going to be much more than installed laminate. Unless you can fabricate counters yourself, something like Uba Tuba or New Venetian Gold would average $2500-$3500 for the average kitchen.

You can absolutely do this on a budget. You can get a stainless sink at a big box store for $300. Laminate counters are cheaper too. Faucet, $150. Knob you can get for $3 a piece. If your cabinets are in good shape, I'd consider paint over refacing. Don't let anyone scare you into thinking you can't do this on a tight budget.

It's definitely doable, if a person is willing to do almost all the work themselves, which most people aren't.

I am doing all wood custom cabinets and granite counters for that price. Find an Amish cabinetmaker, they do beautiful work and at a very reasonable price
