Trying to figure out what to do with our living room.

My wife and I are almost done with our Ryan homes Rome model build and are trying to figure out what to do with our living room. We know we don't want another sitting area that will collect dust. So we are considering any and all options for the room. Some people have suggested a play area for kids but this house has a decent size basement that we were going to use as a play area, also there is a loft on the 2nd floor that we want to use as a reading nook.

I was thinking a card room with a multi use table(chess, poker, scrabble, etc).

You might consider making that an office space and using your study as a project/craft/gift wrapping room. My kids always used the kitchen table which was always a mess with glitter and glue!

It isn't a very big room; it is the first room you see coming into the house? I am all for a game table, but make it attractive and inviting.

Do you entertain much? Since it is adjoining the dining and is the first room when you enter, you might turn it into a cocktail lounge, wine or coffee bar. Install a bar for your featured beverage of choice, comfortable chairs, good lighting.

Since you have a formal dining room, I am going to assume you will be using it. I could envision the living room space as a place to retire after a grand meal, have a coffee or after dinner drink. This line of thought also supports the more relaxed & less formal multi-use table. Cards, conversation, etc. You are on the right track with defining a purpose, so it does not collect dust.
