What a pretty room! But haven't you considered using some type of hard flooring?

Replace carpet with a mid tone. Between light and the current dark. Light carpet would totally wash out the room, unless you did an area rug over carpet. Replace vertical blinds with drapes, you need softness and texture. Maybe some pattern.

HI -- Work with it . I think it will be nice and different . Match some textured drapes that picks up the light color in the carpet . Paint the TV wall the same color as the background color in the carpet both wall and bookcases . This will be more modern and also makes the TV less obvious . Match the wall color to the light color in the carpet . This will also make the fireplace look a little warmer . All this makes everything work together . Your furniture will work for now . Add some side tables and a serious wood and glass coffee table and lamps . Add an accent color such as a soft pumpkin /orange or a soft green in cushions . A nice big painting over the sofa .

I think the walls should be painted the color that matches the darkest beige/taupe color that is on your fireplace wall. This way the walls do not look so stark and the fireplace will pop a bit. Find a wallpaper or a contrasting color that you could use on the bookcase walls. I was thinking a metallic gold/bronze but not sure how that would look once walls are painted. Or a bright color would be nice. You can keep the rug as is, unless it really bothers you. Then I would just buy an area rug. Why go through the trouble of ripping it out? A coffee table, side table with lamps, and some pillows for the sofa would be great to give it a more lived in feel.

My suggestion for the bookcase wall also goes for where the tv is. Another suggestion: Place the sofa so that it faces the tv, and have those 2 chairs face the fire place; add a small table (or a garden stool) in between chairs. And yes definitely change the blinds out to curtains.

I think your beautiful stone fireplace will be highlighted with gray carpet in a very low plush pile. It would look wonderful with your butter chairs too!!! Then paint your walls a lighter gray, & also the bookshelves.

That would be a lot of beige. So many people don't realize that beige comes in so many tones and hues - pinkish, yellow, etc. You can see how the beige walls, beige furniture and beige window treatments all seem to clash.

In what shape is the carpet you have now? If it's decent, consider removing it and have it bound in a smaller size Maybe a foot or so on each side. Install wood floors - I'd go much darker or much lighter - and then pick up the darker color of the rug with your accents. For the drapes, pick up the lighter tones in the fireplace. (Use those tones for choosing your flooring, too. It ain't going nowhere!)

I should have mentioned that the room was just painted BM Muslin. We are coming from darker gold/beige walls and we felt it closed in the narrow room. Also we were thinking of wood but the room is on a slab which has asbestos floor tile on top so wood or engineered wood will be an expense and floor height an issue. (We also have plenty of wood flooring throughout the house.

We are thinking of adding shelves above the tv so it looks more built-in. Thx for the gray carpet idea which we had considered. It may work with coordinating drapes.

What do you guys think of gray carpet with muslin painted walls? What shade of gray( another difficult color)?

Go with the grey! We had it paired with the same colour wall you have and it complimented it well. The trick is to get a warm grey with beige undertones rather than a cold blue or green grey. Also, have you considered carpet tile? They have a lot of options now and they're great for durability. The other advantage is, if you have a stain or tear in one, you can just rip out that tile and put a new one down.

If you invest in a beautiful wool carpet, that would be my ultimate choice for this room. However, if it's not in the budget for wool, there are many great options in lower priced ones. Just make sure you get trackless. That's why I prefer a very low pile. And a warm gray will look great with Muslin. Start shopping!!!

Don't be discouraged. I would change it as it looks like it is for a commercial application such as a hotel lobby. If you wish, you can get a lighter color with a pattern that will better relate to the room and furniture. However, the dark color is the best part, it grounds the room and the furniture works on the dark color. I am not a fan of the existing pattern.

If you go with a berber, you should be able to find some with a variegated thread, which would help with getting the right intermediate shade while also (a) hiding dirt a bit better, and (b) looking a bit more modern. I think there will be ones with gray and tan, so that your walls tie in perfectly, but of course you'll need to bring the samples home to check. Your fireplace provides the bridge anyway, if you stick with a more solid gray.

I would change it for a hardwood floor as you have on the room next this one. it will be more clean and light and also will give you felling of spaciuousness and confort.

I think the verticals should be change to drapery panels. This is a Thibaut fabric.

Get some brass lighting...make sure the shade is a lighter color so the wall color will be the backdrop.

Strongly suggest you paint the book cases, heating vents black.
