Asparagus Dead

Most of my 4 y.o. Asparagus plants failed to show signs of life this spring - several that did survive only produced a few scrawny spears. Plants are in good rich soil in raised beds. Last year I had more asparagus than I knew what to do with! I just dug up several of the non-viable crowns - the roots look plump with white "healthy"-looking feeder rootlets, but the crowns are fibrous and slimey with a fermenting smell. We had a very mild winter this year and then an arctic blast after the garden was showing signs of life. Weather-related or a fungus?
