Bamboo roots - to split or not?

I recently bought a Phyllostachys nigra which is about 6 foot tall. Am replanting into a 60cm container this weekend - should I split up the roots for quickest "spread" in the pot, or just replant straight from the small pot it's currently in and let nature take it's course?

Spread them a bit. That plant will be a monster, and I didn't not know if the pot is big enough to keep it from tipping over. Also note you will need to trim the roots every year or replant.
