I have a very traditional plantation-esque style house (white hardy plank with black shutters) interpreted in a transitional way (interior: whites and brights; no browns, burgundies, golds, forest green and navy).

Is it appropriate to use both roman shades and traditional shutters (i.e. the small version of plantation shutter)? I want to use shutters in some rooms but want to create a "transom effect" by closing the bottom set of shutters while leaving the top completely open. Would it be better for me to get 2 sets of shutters (one on top and one on bottom) and just leave the top ones open? Or can I use curtains above the shutters to soften the look and inject color?
