Hi "V". It looks good. With the nice symmetry, the hood & cook top area does lend itself to be the focal point. So keeping with your frame idea, you can be imaginative, and work with neat textures like metal, or stone/masonry, or wood. Or a customized colorful mosaic, of regular tile pieces (are you a diy-er?) -- that could look nice in a frame - like artwork, depending on the direction you want to take it.

If you did the frame idea, you could make the backsplash as wide as that area (corner to corner i.e.: mixer to knife block). That might be neat. If that's too wide, then maybe no smaller than 4 inches outside the cooktop. I found some of the mediums I mentioned. A lot of them cover more area than what you had in mind, but take a look!

I like your idea of putting tile under the vent and then leaving the rest of the walls without tile. Your picture shows a very crisp and visually open kitchen. Very nice!

I think you are right, subway and glass are trendy now and date the home to this time period. I have done hundreds of kitchens and you can get creative with a mixture of styles. This was a design I did for a couple in Downers Grove Illinois that was reasonably prices (tile $6.sq.ft. Labor $500) for the whole counter area and we did collaborate with the homeowner to make them a custom design over their cooktop. I hope this helps (FL)
