Love MCM!

There is a huge following for Mid Century Modern......It is a minimalist look, but it looks beautiful in an elegant space surrounded by glass..........

Well this is the MCM we lived through in the 50's if we were lucky. Most of it looked more like this below. Glad to be rid of it.

Obviously there are MCM lovers and haters.......everyone is entitled to their own opinion........

I don't think you should limit yourself to a very specific look like mid century modern. Going modern/contemporary is the way here but you can mix elements to your liking, including something mcm.

I think it's perfectly suitable in your space, mid-cent., mid-cent modern, or a combination of elements of these and other styles

First off, this home is stunning just bare and empty! Wow!

If Mid Century furnishings really speak to you then I would say go for it, especially in this glass-walled beauty!

You could, as others have mentioned, also blend in some more Modern and/or Contemporary pieces. All of these styles would rock in this gorgeous space! Congrats!

Good comments,all. Pick your midcentury pieces with an eye to the most classic....and authentic. By the way, Thayer Coggin is back in the games and they have some wonderful pieces.

Thanks to all for the kind tips, I am good at putting electronics in the room but not good at mixing in styles as well as matching colors, maybe should find a designer.

I like INFORM for pieces that really suit MCM but with a bit of a twist and for some iconic pieces I order on line from Desgn Within Reach and BTW that style will look awesome in that space

For example, I am so attracted to this vintage.

There is the MCM total replicated look from the 50's, but also a modern uptake which incorporates the iconic pieces and is mixed with contemporary pieces. For instance your seating above could be used more as an accent piece, but paired up with a couch. Would also recommend doing a floor plan, which will be important in deciding what you want and need. ShanghaiRay, one two seater does not a home make..............nice piece, but what do you blend it with and have you tried to sit in that piece with someone else? If you're a collector, that's something else entirely.

I think that you can find a local designer who will be able to help you pull this together. It will be a fun project for you and your designer. Find someone who loves MCM as much as you....

Are you in Vancouver or Shanghai ? Or where is the apartment that you are furnishing ?

It's a lovely piece but I think it is more of an accent piece - used as a vignette on its own - see below how the two chairs are used and then you would have a couch as well. Could also be a great piece in a bedroom or den.

@mareen, yes, to some extreme, i keep asking myself, why i need a piece of big sofa, two ellegent chairs would do.

You own that house and are asking a bunch of untrained amateurs on the internet for advice in furnishing it? The same people who know no options except to paint everything black or with chalk paint?

Elegant chairs in a grouping provide an open and minimal look, but you have to decide on how you will be using the room and your needs - form follows function. I had suggested a floor plan earlier and that will help to you figure out pieces/sizes/locations. That goes for your outside balcony as well - decide on your needs, then decide on the style. Inspiration pictures may also help with both spaces. The balcony doesn't have to match the interior only have harmony..ie: modern pieces but they don't have to be MCM. If you really don't have a feeling/direction, a professional would help.

We've done alot of outdoor patio's for condo's and apartments where we put down artificial turf. It helps the homeowners feel like they have a yard and it's so nice to look out of your apartment windows and see greenery.

CB2, West Elm, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware and ZuoModern have alot of great pieces that you might want to check out.

Looks like you will have enough space for a sectional and fire pit with a dining table and bbq area. If you get some beautiful planters, floor lanters and extra throw cushions, it will really start to feel like a homey, but stylish, backyard.

Pic #1 (the top photo) is closer to the MCM twist. It is cleaner, more in keeping with the low-key sleek beauty of MCM. I prefer Danish Modern myself when working with MCM (I prefer more of a European look when working with MCM...not the N. American version).

Option #3 is horrendous (IMHO). Adding in the intense detail of the Asian inspired carvings is too much for the sleekness of MCM/Danish Modern. Sorry but you've overstepped the mark on this one.

If you want to add Asian inspiration, look to Japanese minimalism. It would fit in beautifully with MCM sleekness.

If you can afford a condo that size, with that deck, in Great Vancouver (Coquitlam is the next Surrey/Burnaby) you can afford a designer. I highly recommend getting on board with someone who can help find those beautiful pieces that fit the space.

As for the difference in price of the settee, think of it as the difference between US dollars and Canadian dollars. It makes it easier to bear.

I like the second outdoor photo Maureen posted. This is a property you own, not a rental? I think you should pay up and get top notch professional help for the outdoor space. Someone who can add a fireplace feature and figure out how to place furniture and structural elements appropriately to account for the exposures and your local climate. So that you can comfortably use the space more days out of the year. Obviously, they will have to consider any restrictions imposed by the building.

That is a really big outdoor area, and visually it is an extension of the indoors. You should maximize it. It looks a little stark now.

The inside is really nice. The layout looks reasonable. I like the piece of furniture you picked, but I dislike the other photos you posted. They look too retro, too theme-y. Do you have existing furniture?

I think you would be better off just going with a more neutral, modern approach and selectively adding a few quality MCM pieces that speak to you. Don't design around an MCM theme.

I am disappointed that a Pro Designer would toss off some of our pillars of modern design of the 20th Century: George Nelson, Charles and Ray Eames, Alvar Aalto, Jens Risom, Saarinen, Bertoia, Noguchi, Jacobsen, Prouvé, Wegner...the list goes on! "Falling out of favor?!?!" Really?! Oh my!

Not to mention Florence Knoll and everything her ascribers adhere to. And, Marco Zanuso, as well as all the Danish, Finnish, and other modernist Scandinavian designers that are perfectly suited to MCM....please share the designers you think are appropriate for this beautiful space.

Omg who wouldn't have a smile on their face walking into this space, just rings happiness. Oh if only I was that brave.

Don't know if The Cross is still around in Vancouver but if so, their opulence and detailed pieces could be a nice counterpoint of the MCM minimalist...

Have you considered an area rug? That would be a great place to introduce a little color!

Don't forget that two of the creators of Mid Century Modern were pack rats and kept a very cluttered house (Charels and Ray Eams). It's a much more flexible style than many realize.

Peter Barnard, I'm too young to know, but apparently closet space was quite dismal back then. I've been to some of the houses of that era and that's my impression. There was no California Closets or Elfa either. Just something to think about. Sorry, couldn't help, but make a comment on that. Good storage (and careful editing, of course), makes all the difference.
