This kitchen features dark stained perimeter cabinetry with a contrast white island for the clean, transitional look.

The hardwood color is a bit lighter than the cabinets, but it still pulls in nice warm tones from the counter top used.

Here's the kitchen in my personal home. Although my cabinets are faux-painted, you could have a light gray tone in your wood stain to give it the traditional, yet interesting look. If you notice, the perimeter cabinets and the island are the same color.

If you notice the color of the floor in this photo, it has the slight gray tone to it as well to match nicely with the cabinet stain and the counter top / backsplash materials.

Here's a larger scale kitchen, but I wanted you to see that you could use two different wood stains to give it the contrast instead of painting.

This hardwood floor has both the darker and the lighter wood tones to tie the two contrasting wood stain colors in.
