What color should I paint my coffered ceiling? Match the walls- dark - or bright

I am building a new home that has coffered ceilings in the great room, kitchen and morning room (all one big rectangle). Most of my furniture is traditional casual (not elegant) and I am not sure how to paint the ceiling. should I match the wall with a basic Latte or go dark or bright. I need something that will stand the test of times as I am not one to change paint often, esp on a ceiling. The photos are a model home but very similar to ours. Any help is appreciated. M. Smith

It really depends on the lighting in the room. In the picture you provided, there's a lot of natural light so you can get dramatic with the contrast-painted ceiling detail and it won't feel like a cave or a movie theater. If you're rooms are darker and lack natural light, I'd keep it lighter and go with enough variation to make it interesting but not darken it. The dark is pretty heavy for my taste and I think I'd get tired of it after a while.

The lighting will be similar to this... a triple window and large patio door. This ceiling is painted a dark green, which I don't really care for. I was thinking dark (navy) blue, dark brown or the same as the walls (a basic neutral). I like a welcome feeling and have seen some that make the rooms feel very formal.

In the recess square on the ceiling try Behr's Gobi Desert 710C-3 the outlining area Raffia Cream 710 C2 and the walls and the walls Harvest Brown with baseboards and trimming in Raffia cream. The back wall for interest could be a blue called Gulf Winds. ...all really nice with the light floor...or even nice if you had an espresso floor.

I've seen coffered ceilings painted in one color- meaning trim and ceiling. It doesn't highlight the pretty work on the ceiling but looks uniform and very upscale. What about painting ceiling and all other trim in the room Mayonnaise (Benjamin Moore.)

I vote for one color, you decide whether mayonnaise or mascarpone or another shade of white. The light ceiling feels higher, adds more air and brightens the space. Besides it gives you more freedom to play with the rest colors in your room. I think he recess lights will throw shadows and the white ceiling wouldn't look boring. Enjoy the great space!
