Merit sweet corn will no longer be available?

I bought some Merit corn from a local farmer yesterday. He said this would be the last year for it because some other company (no name) bought out the producers and it would no longer be available.

Has anyone else heard this too? He should know what he is talking about because he is a big time farmer. He owns a dairy worth millions $ and farms 100's if not thousands of acres.

I hope he is wrong!

Merit is a real antique among hybrids ( Asgrow released it in 1961). Asgrow, Peto, and Royal Sluis were acquired by Monsanto and combined into Seminis in the 90's. Most Asgrow intros have been discontinued. Most of the big seed developers are chemical companies and they have been merging for the last couple decades. Monsanto is currently being considered by Bayer for a buyout. whichever way that goes, Seminis has been concentrating on the commercial market and discontinuing varieties that are no longer competitive. They don't appear to have a single Su in thier current line up. Sometimes a variety that is popular with home gardeners will be picked up by a minor company wwhich caters to home gardeners.

That is strange because it shows to be a Seminis owned variety. I don't believe I have had it before myself.

I grow it almost every year. It isn't a super sweet, which I like better. It also is easy to remove the silks.

Monsanto bought Seminis back in 2005 and has gradually been shifting focus so plans to discontinue many different varieties of Seminis seed. Or so the news reports.

I just checked with Southern States Co-op, They do produce Merit. https://www.southernstates.com/catalog/p-8405-southern-states-hybrid-merit-sweetcorn.aspx

Monsanto ceased to exist 4 years ago so they aren't polluting much these days.
