I would suggest a glass backsplash that brings the cool counter colors and the warm wall and cabinetry colors together. Even though there are high ceilings, I would not suggest putting things on top of the cabinets.

I love your cabinets and I feel the same way about mine! They are never getting painted! I would go with a light countertop, lighter than the cabinets and depending on what countertop you decide on will determine what backsplash to get since you want the backsplash to look great with both the countertops and cabinets!

I'd use a black tile to complement your granite, in a rectangle or arabesque shape.

I'd add some cabinet hardware. My kitchen has cabinets that are higher above the oven, in one corner and above the refrigerator. I felt that the rest of it was too low. I found a gorgeous vase at Home Goods, and put it on top of the side that was too low, and that was all I needed. Other than the vase, I would not add anything else.

You have just a small backsplash area and your kitchen is fairly dark. Whatever you decide on if you could find a way to remove some of the canisters and knife sets, etc from tops your kitchen would open up. You may prefer function over form but just consider how often you use things.

You might consider having another pantry cabinet built that would go from floor to tops of cabinets. Place it where the bookshelf is now. Use the same oak to tie it in with your other cabs. Doors hinged on the right.

Actually, you can order cabinets like the one above. No need to have one built.

So right, that's why I said function over form. Keep out what you need frequently and put the others away.
