Help me finish this room!

This avocado green velvet sofa was my husband's grandmothers and I thought it was pretty cool. The table between the chairs was hers too, and I'd like to refinish it but not sure what finish or color to make it. Trunk was also in my family but I don't need to keep it in this room. Planning on getting a white shag rug, not sure about window treatments or coffee table. Also not sure if I should keep the mirror matte gold (brass nailheads on sofa) or paint it white or something else to help it stand out from grey walls. Sorry the wall color looks purple...it's Behr Fashion Grey. Ideas? Thanks!

It can be very cool, but I could tip toward too traditional if you're not careful Maybe you should work in some royal blue or turquoise, or bright coral or something a little more out there. I don't know how to add pictures, but google Miles Redd - he's done a couple of rooms in this color scheme that are fabulous.

Good idea, I had thought about turquoise. You're right...his rooms are gorgeous.
I would go white on this just to make the room feel more spacious. It will also bring out that green beautifully. My thoughts anyway.

Over the top, certainly, but the color combos are wonderful.

You could also consider touches of yellow to keep from becoming overly traditional. Or look at fossil stone tables, in white or beige, and white wash the table between the chairs.

emonili.com has a nice version of the table I was thinking of.

I would get an area rug and get a design that has green and gray in it to tie your colors and room together. I love the sofa!
@veranya...I saw that green sofa too. I love all the colors! My side chairs do have a touch of blue so maybe I can pick up on that. @greener solutions...I do really like rustic/natural/vintage-y elements...whitewash for the side table is a good idea. Thanks for recommending that website.

The sunburst mirror is nice, but it feels too small for over the sofa. Will it work on the little wall behind the table? Love the idea f throwing in some turquoise.
Great sofa. Don't think the mirror is too small, just hung too high. A flokati will be fun! Floor to ceiling drapery panels and you're well on your way!
You're right...the mirror could be lowered. Thanks!

What do you think about turquoise side tables? Or use turquoise just as an accent with accessories?
Love the idea of turquoise side tables. I just was looking through pinterest and found pins from Eric Cohler, a decorator from New York. His own apartment in NYC has a green sofa justlike yours, with a lot of color and also black/white/cream african prints. It's cool - google Eric cohler - his portfolio is great, but his own apartment is better.

    HI,
I have a similar color on my walls and they look purple too.
Add more items with the mirror, a collection of anything interesting.
A pattern rug, striped a different pattern from the chairs. Maybe floor tiles, flor.com
The trunk looks better at the foot of a bed.
At the windows, floor to ceiling panels to cut down on the glare.
Then add upholstered bench in front of the window about the size of the indentation, nothing small.
    Good Luck,

So I found these cute side tables, this rug which has all the colors in it and a lamp for the wood table that I plan to whitewash soon. And I lowered the mirror a bit. Thoughts? Thanks for all the suggestions! This is fun. :)

    You're getting there! Keep tweaking!

The tables are darling and the rug is good too. You're doing great things! I just discovered Joss & Main, on online sale site that has a new sale every day - they have had some very interesting things the last few days. They might have things that would help. Some of it is too sweet, but you never know...

Ok add a rug any rug I. Your taste and a nice coffee table. Put a cool lamp behind the couch like on the very left side will make it more cozy
  • 13 years ago
Yes, the tables call for cool lamps, not necessarily matching. I feel like the room needs some height in addition to maybe drapes. Maybe a narrow bookcase somewhere? Or a screen?
I think the room needs height too. I saw some cool lamps that are grey bubble glass bases with white shades that might be good on the tables. My decorating budget is practically non-existent, so my goal is to add a little here and there when something catches my eye. It helps so much to know what to look for, so all of these comments are really helpful!

Gray bubbles sounds great. The room is nice just as it is, so you don't have to do anything in the next minute. It's more fun when you use things that you find along the way rather than buying them all at once. Are you anywhere near a TJMaxx/HomeGoods store? They often have a wide selection of offbeat lamps. Their artwork is not always good, but the lamps are the best.

I think you should do the table between the chairs the same color or stain as the legs of the chairs.

I think the mirror should be a little bit lower still.
I love the wall color, the trunk, and the couch. I think the print on the chairs leans a bit more contemporary, and based on the other choices, I think you're going more modern? So I'd reupholster the chairs something more graphic, but it looks like the chairs are in pretty good condition, so maybe just add some graphic pillows to the couch.
Yes, at some point I think you'll want to put a more graphic bright on the chairs. If tey're in good shape, though, they can wait.
Yes, do something to the mirror to make it pop. I see what you mean about the nailheads on the sofa - don't want the metals to clash. Maybe the mirror would pop more if it weren't reflecting more gray paint on the opposite side? I always like a mirror to reflect something that adds interest to my view...

The chairs are new, so I don't plan on recovering anytime soon, but I like the idea of graphic pillows on the couch. I love Homegoods...bought the tables, rug and lamp there. :) I don't want to go too modern with the room, and hope to add some organic/natural/rustic elements (like maybe a reclaimed wood-type coffee table). Or I saw one on Craig's list that has a glass top and wood base that I could refinish. I'll wait to see what I do with the coffee table before I decide how to refinish the table between the chairs.

Add this!! In a different color! ( the zigzags)

I just made a scrap book page with these very colors. The turquoise tables are great. I had some tone on tone strips in a sort of aged yellow beige. That would be great for your tall windows, a sisal or something that wheat color would be nice on the floor. Also I think the mirror looks lonely, it needs two friends close to it.
Definitely need to add some friends for the mirror, lol. Might move it off center and add a couple other small sunburst mirrors, like a picture I saw after googling Eric Cohler (suggested above).

you can make the additional mirrors out of ceiling medalions (for around light fixtures) paint and craft mirrors, inexpensive and very nice looking when done.

tall house plants can add additional color, and height too. :)

I saw some wonderful mirrors on One Kings Lane today. I think the main idea is to get one that has more reflective surface and one that has less mirror surface than the one you presently have. Even though the ring around it is large the mirror itself is small and that what stands out. It just needs something to balance it. I love the color of that sofa.
I also bought some slightly irredescent clear glass beads (flat on one side) that I was thinking about gluing to the end of each spoke of my current mirror, to add some shine. I thought it came that way when I bought it online (from One King's Lane) but it didn't, and was final sale. Hoping that helps it stand out from the wall too.
    That would be cool!

I just wanted to chime in because we have the same slipper chairs! I love them and I have not seen them anywhere on Houzz until now. I am excited to see what you do with them. Those turquoise tables are a great find, too!

I agree that the mirror looks a little small or lonely--the size of the overall piece is really nice but the mirror itself is a bit small and doesn't make as much of an impact. I love what you have done so far, though--looking forward to seeing what you add :)
Would it be crazy to say that maybe the wall above the sofa would be better with nothing rather than the too-small mirror? It's such a pretty mirror, maybe it would really stand out somewhere else, rather than being underappreciated where it is now...
Yes! Add flat glass beads on the ends of the sticks, that will make the mirror seem larger.

Just discovered two new online sales sites that have cool things - Fab and Gilt. Different types of things, but both may have fun/cool things that look good in you room.
I would add some cushions on the couch to help incorporate other colors in the room. Since you have added blue tables, you might want to use that color. Go to Etsy.com and input pillows in their search engine and a lot of different shops will appear.

Would love too see an updated photo of this room, I love your colors and those chairs.
How about some turquoise and lime green throw pillows for the sofa?
Love all your pieces. You simply need a white rug.
