Any Cuddledown bedding customers here?

I have had my eye on a bedding set from their Meridian Sateen collection -- duvet, sheets, shams, the works -- but it is awfully spendy for my budget. They are having a 25% off sale, though, for the holiday and I feel the need to pull the trigger. Does anyone have any experience with their quality and how they launder? Do you get what you pay for? And do you think I will have to press the sateen duvet? Thanks for any insight.

@Roc is far more experienced with them than I am, but I have a cotton/linen blend summer blanket for our bed that is 100% top-notch quality. I also used a discount code to acquire it because it wasn't cheap, but no regrets. Also, you always pay for shipping with Cuddledown. Know this.

I can't comment on sateen I'm afraid, except to say I'd assume it would wrinkle less than percale.

Thanks, Alex! I do see there's no free lunch at CD when it comes to shipping. Too bad. But 25% off is the best deal I've seen with them. Hoping roc will check in.

I would add that I am replacing a set of Sferra sheets and some Scandia Home shams that I really, really dislike. It is all shockingly rough, to the point I wonder if I got counterfeit merchandise. CD sent me a sample of the Meridian sateen and it's like butter.

Lizzie...do you normally sleep on Sateen? I know a lot of people like it, but if your not used to sateen, it can almost feel sticky. But lets see what Roc thinks, she's the expert in this field. I just slightly dabble in vintage ..I know beans about sateen LOL. Good luck my chick.

Alex..did you get the ones pictured? Printed linen? Be careful how hot you launder printed linen as linen does not hold dye well. Very attractive Alex.

It was still in package, but holes in plastic so sheet was horriably yellowed...this is from the 50's and extremely rare find for this size.

Sorry Lizzie...back to your sheets...I've heard Sateen refered to as buttery before. I guess you want to order soon. From what I've read Cuddledown has a great rep.

Yes Alex, that print is BEAUTIFUL. I'd love to have that duvet or top sheet as a summer spread!

I use my white duvet cover as a spread and don't stick anything inside. Its too warm. In the winter, its too white, lol.

ETA my duvet is not a Cuddledown, I don't know why I posted :)

@MamaP - yes, those are the exact printed sheets I ordered. Not going above 120-130F on those due to the print. It's only white that I dare launder higher. Nice find on that Stevens sheets.

Lizzie - let us know what you decide.

We've given up on Cuddledown after several disappointments. A king mattress pad was a very tight fit on the bed, no matter which way we tried it, and the underside of the pad was made of non-woven material that tore. A special sleeping position pillow didn't work for my wife, though that may be personal preference. I liked their temperature-regulating comforter, but had to return it because it was so noisy. I replaced it with another down-alternative comforter from Cuddledown, and threw that one away recently because the filling was hopelessly clumped, even though I used their special down fluffers in the dryer. Could have returned the comforter instead, but it didn't seem the right thing to do by that point.

@Miz Lizzie - I've been a Cuddledown customer since early 90s when I visited their store in Maine. I have their down pillows, down quilt, bed pad (recent), and most recently a sateen lightweight quilt. To me, they are tops -- old-fashioned quality on everything. But you pay for what you get IYKWIM and the shipping is a tough nut. They have sitewide sales, or free shipping offers but never both. No idea why and I've inquired.

Also beware they want you to become a VIP member which refunds the shipping but you pay $14.95/month and it's hard to get rid of -- bad program IMO.

But top, top quality. The sateen quilt was immediately wonderful and has been. They really know what they are doing. Their sateen should be tops.

Take it you understand the difference between sateen and percale? It's the weave. Sateen are smoother as there is more surface threads.

It's also a bit more forgiving -- you should be able to hand smooth the duvet. But I would call them and inquire about that and see what they say.

They also refilled my quilt with down after 20 years for less than $150. So they stand behind and they do have great service IME.

rococogurl, re VIP member program being hard to get rid of, the solution is to use a virtual card number, or ShopSafe as Bank of America calls them. Cancel the virtual card and they can't charge you anymore. I use virtual card numbers for almost all of my online shopping.

@suburbanmd - No idea what that is or how I would get it. Is there a link? Very good idea.

@ miz lizzie - Last year I reviewed these sateen sheets. They are called Second Skin They were nice at first but have improved with washing and are among my most loved. They also are embroidered and Portuguese made. The price point may be equal to or better than Cuddledown if you like the style. But I must say these hold their own beautifully against the Sferra and I would definitely love another set. They are holding up perfectly and the embroidery does not shrink. I do iron them. However, no matching duvet so that's not the same as having the full monty, which is very nice.

I know of two choices: Virtual Account Numbers from Citicard, and ShopSafe numbers from Bank of America. Info on their sites.

Okay, I pulled the trigger. Postage was a whopping $38 but I saved over three times that on shipping. Fingers crossed we like it because this was more money than I ever spent on bedding before, and I'm feeling guilty all. Thanks, roc and all, for the helpful advice. Yep, they tried to hit me up for the monthly fee. Seems crazy.

Congrats MizLizzie! Fingers crossed you will love the sheets. Let us know how it goes. I just got their catalog yesterday and I forced myself to throw it away because there is such temptation (despite the shipping).

I would also suggest trying some of the LeBlanc linen wash which should really help keep the texture of those sheets ultra smooth.

I second Roc's advice on the LeBlanc...its a lovely detergent as is Forever New. I don't usually like boutique detergents, generally find them worthless, but these two stand out in the crowd.

Sweet Dreams with your new bedding.

Thanks, roc. It's in the cart. Would you use that with hot water for sateen sheets and duvet?

I wash in very warm 120-125F usually. Easier on the textiles and the elastics but warm enough to get them really clean. The bonus with LB is the conditioning. If the sheets are removed from the dryer barely damp they should be able to be smoothed. Even my percales are much smoother, softer and silker with LB and I only use 1 Tb.

I've had it for years but most of the high end textiles sites recommend it now.

Just chiming in that I've ordered 2 comforters from Cuddledown and the items were as expected.

I'm glad you mentioned LB and Forever New. It reminded me I used to do all my laundry with FN before I moved out of state. Since I stopped, my things never seem to last as long. I only use 'natural' detergents so I had assumed they were just as gentle and it was the new water or washers that were the problem.. hmmmmm????

Just a heads up as I didn't realize even though mizlizzie mentioned. CD has their 25% off sitewide sale ending tonight.

DO NOT DO IT!!!! This is the absolute WORST company to deal with in the entire world of retail. You would think with pillows over $200 dollars that the customer service would AT THE VERY LEAST be effective. I have gotten the run around for over a month on a return. Every 7-10 business days I am told they just re-escalated and I should wait 7-10 business days. I am done.

This is my VERY old thread, and sadly, most posters are no longer here. Sorry you didn’t like your pillows. But in fairness, I have to report I am still sleeping on my Cuddledown Meridian and have since added more Cuddledown coordinates. Most weeks, I strip, wash, then put them right back on because the dh doesn’t like to sleep on any other brand. (It’s weird he even notices.) Best sheets I have ever owned, and far and away the most comfy. But I don’t have their pillows. I have always found the “Cuddledown ladies” very sweet and helpful if a little ditzy. But I have made only one return, and it was of unopened merchandise. That went seamlessly, and I’m sorry yours has not.
