Windows

We have a 1973 home and would like to replace these yellow plastic / glass-like Windows near our front door and one large one on our garage. Replacing the yellow Windows will truly update our home. I am in love with the concept of glass windows with a slight tint. Also the Windows where I can look out from inside the house and folks outside find it hard to look in.

Any suggestions for what we can do? I am looking for a solution that is $5k or less. Btw..Andersen Windows quoted me &30k to replace just 3 arch Windows..so I am totally turned off by that company.

The 1970 s are back in fashion.

@beverly do you have recommendations for the type of glass?
@tribbletrouble yes! I love the70s...our house still has the 70s elements mixed with modern. But these windows have to go. Hehe

I am surprised by $10k per window from Andersen. I quote them all the time, and it is very rare to top $5k even on very large arches.

Who quoted them-big box store, dealer, Renewal By Andersen...?

I also agree that the idea of replacing just the glass is a viable option if the frames are in good condition, and you like the windows otherwise.

@quasiexpert they were door to door salesman from Andersen. Once we said we were interested, they sent a sales rep who had a 45 min presentation discussing the difference between their windows versus other companies. Specifically they have a specitalty material that takes the benefits of wood, vinyl etc. and will last at least 99 years..blah blah blah...then he pulled out a fancy excel sheet to calculate the cost and offer financing options. My mouth literally dropped to the ground when he gave us a quote! Then he said he would give me a discount. Dropping the price to $22k...so I'm over that company.

@quasiexpert do you have recommendations for the type of glass? Andersen didn't really share options that I was interested in

I would assume then that it was Renewal By Andersen. It's a separate entity from their core product carried by dealers, and gives them a bad rap. I have a hard time even listening to someone going door to door, about anything. Going to a dealer who is willing to listen to YOU instead of giving you their memorized pitch should be quite different. It's your call if you whether or not you are willing to give a dealer a shot.

Oh gotcha! Yes it was renewal! I didn't realize it was a separate entity.so when you say dealer, I suppose I should talk to someone from Home Depot etc.
I think I need a designer too. I'm very conflicted about the type of window and pricing. I've been given quotes from local window companies who proposed either replacing the window or the glass..but the prices are dependent on the type of glass I want. It's a tough decision

I might consider eliminating the arched openings on your home and switch to rectangular windows. They are less expensive than arched windows, however, your brickwork would have to be altered.

@beverly we considered that too..however we love the arch concept...it's reminiscent of the 70s and integrity of our home.

I'm sorry, I didn't see the comment about glass recommendations until now. It really depends on your personal preference, but if you're going for clear glass I would recommend AW's SmartSun LowE for great performance with nearly clear views, or Sun LowE for a heavier tint for privacy.

But if you want reeded, pebbled, special tints, there are many options. Including art glass with caming.

As far as a dealer-HD is ok, but you will typically get more knowledge and time from a standalone dealer. We usually are on par with HD's pricing anyway

Just for a comparison, I plugged in a window like yours that is 4' wide x 8' tall with LowE glass, and it came up to around $2500. And just for fun, I plugged in an operable door unit with hardware in that shape with dimensions of 3'2" x 8', it was about $4750.
