Hand-pollinating corn -- when to start

I have three good-sized stalks of sweetcorn growing on my balcony. It's my first time growing any sort of corn, but so far it seems to be going surprisingly well with several ears forming on each stalk.

I've done a lot of googling about hand-pollinating (it's very windy on the balcony, but I'm guessing you can't leave it to nature with just three stalks), but here's the one thing I was hoping someone could clarify: When should I start hand-pollinating and how often should I do it? Should I start the second that I see a single silk and then do it every day? Or should I wait a day or two after they start emerging and do the hand-pollination once or twice? Thanks!
