as we've remodeled bathrooms we've gotten rid of rings and just use robe hooks for the hand towels.

I love hooks....can probably put 2-3 where only one alternative can fit...there are pretty cool big hooks where there is a hook on top and one below..so you can even put a hand towel on top...big towel below ...and especially in kids baths where they don't need to fold or fuss...

I think a lot depends on your available space. Rings (or hooks, as other posters mentioned) are nice for smaller bathrooms where space might be tight next to a vanity or sink.

Small or large baths...I prefer hooks...so much easier..mounted a little high on the wall and getting creative with the hooks is a fresh new take on a normally mundane fixture

I typical do rings in powder rooms and bars in larger bathrooms. Do what you like though and what you have the space for. There's really not a hard and fast rule.

I like towel bars. When we have a houseful of people or someone is sick, I take down the hand towels and put up Kleenex hand towels boxes. No worries about overly wet towels or sharing germs.

I like a towel ring next to the sink and then bars for towels. Hooks are so easy but they aren't good for airing out wet towels.

Went from hook to ring to paper towel dispenser in the half bath.
The paper is composted. Just couldn't keep up with the overly wet towel.
Not glamour but oh so practical

If the guest/hall bath is used regularly by kids and occasionally by guests, I would suggest a towel bar with bath towels for kids' regular use and, when entertaining guests, replacing the bar towels with nicer decorative towels and adding decorative paper towels in a tray/basket to the countertop or on a wall mounted shelf (if a pedestal sink). I find small towels on rings get too wet with regular use and guests often like the idea of their own towel.

I went with all hooks in my bathroom and it's worked out very well.

I love towel bars in bathrooms for bath towels and rings by the sink for hand towels. I do not like hooks because the towel does not dry right and since I monogram my towels, the monogramming gets lost on the hook! Also, when the towels are not placed properly on the hooks, they fall off.
