Since your fireplace is wood burning and it looks like you use it, I wouldn't mount the TV over the fireplace due to heat and smoke. I would keep your TV on the wall you have now. Purchase a media console cabinet to place the new TV.

To create a cozier seating environment, you could maybe do an L-shaped sectional floated in front of your fireplace and facing out towards TV wall. Put a console table on the back of the sectional by your french doors. Keep the other walls free for traffic circulation around the perimeter of the room.

Is the TV location you have now comfortable for viewing, though?

For the recessed lights, I would do 4" cans evenly spaced about 6' apart.
Or forgo the expense of recessed and put some buffet lamps on the console behind the sectional and get a couple interesting floor lamps.

Put panels on windows nice rod with to the floor white panels. Then move sofa so you are opposite TV. Put chair where sofa is now. Use end tables small table by left side of chais angle chair towards TV. Fill in wall space with tall palms in nice pots in color.

Also get a nice dark wood coffee table use ottoman by chair.

I would have some type of TV furniture built in on the other wall and rearrange your couch so that you are facing the TV.

A lot of people don't like the TV mounted above the fireplace.

1. Has to be mounted high so viewing angles aren't comfortable.
2. Heat from fire rises so could be too hot for electronics.
3. Mounting and routing cables on brick is difficult.
4. Still need a separate cabinet to house A/V hardware.

I would say if no $ or desire to remodel the fireplace, don't bother trying to mount the TV above it.

A set of 4 comfy swivel lounge chairs might work around the fireplace with a round coffee table.

Well I would paint the wall darker and mount larger tv on that. Keep fireplace for artwork. Ideally you could replace couch with another lounger. But instead keep and add some large cushions on floor in front of fireplace or an ottoman off to the side or in middle. I would go for ceiling lights for each corner and have a small track in front of fireplace for spotlighting. Then add reading floor lamps as needed.

It looks as though you have enough distance from the TV to your seating area so you wouldn't be "craning" your neck to view it comfortably. The thought of the TV above the fireplace is a nice one. It's a space saver and allows for different furniture/decorating options along the side wall. As suggested, with the wood burning fireplace, some care should be taken in regards to such a placement due to the heat and smoke generated. One solution, as suggested by Coastal Home Solutions, is to place a gas or electric fireplace insert into the fire box. If you like the ambiance of a true wood burning fireplace however, a decorative mantle, if properly constructed, can serve to sheild the TV from the heat and smoke. One issue with that solution is that it typically forces the TV to be placed even higher on the wall.

I would keep TV where it is but rearrange furn as I suggested in earlier post. Get big flat TV. Put on long low media. In dark wood. Have you painted. I would do warmer color on walls. Buy sample cans at lowes or home d. See what looks good. Get a bigger taller picture for fireplace.

Add screen to fireplace. And some plants on hearth.

Thank you all for the words of wisdom! I am leaning towards keeping the TV on the wall where it is currently situated. Travisinteriors, you asked if I had painted. The answer is no and the that's the next thing I have to decide on. Also wondering if i should paint the brick on the fireplace.

I have the same layout as you and have the dilemma of where to put the tv as well! Right now I have it in the corner, but would like a bigger tv. If I place it on the wall as you have yours, you can't watch from the couch unless you turn sideways. What did you end up doing? I'm at a loss with my layout.

Fel76, since this was a 2013 post , i suggest you start your own post with pictures of your room for help on your particular project.

I saw a basement photo somewhere and they did built ins under both windows and painted them and the fire place all the same color. Then they hung curtains short it filmed he space nicely and looked cozy like it was intentional and not an afterthought.

you could then decide that f you want to put tv on either side at angle or do built ins on other wall.

i love built ins.

i do not think a tv always has to be front and center.

Look on YouTube for basement ideas....try house and home magazine videos
