Wood repair/prep/prime exterior

We need to prep and prime the exposed exterior while we decide on paint colors. I'm seeing differences in opinions on type of products to use. We were thinking of using a wood patch for any bare areas with gaps in wood, sanding, and then priming. We would like to protect it first and then will not have budget to paint for about 6 months so it will be painted over immediately. I'm confused on whether to use latex or oil primer. We are looking to do the priming ourselves and hire a professional painter in early fall. any suggestions greatly appreciated. here are some pics of the worst areas. We're exactly not sure how to handle the rusted flashing. the roof is fairly new, about 7 years old. Does the rust get painted over? Thank you!
