Kidney failure in Senior and diet

I am sad to report that my sweet Tasha, my 15 year old baby ( who by the way is the Princess) had a rough day yesterday and today we learned she had a kidney infection and dealing with some level of kidney failure. Too soon to know what degree. It's the first health issue she has had since she was 2 with hemolytic anemia, so I know I have been so blessed, but gosh it never gets easier when faced with a sick baby - it breaks my heart.

Along with sub-q fluids and various other meds, my vet and I agree we should address the diet as well post haste. I am hopeful Tasha will get her appetite back soon - she has NEVER not had an appetite - I forgot how tough this is ( dealt with this before with cancer dog)

She was cooked for a brief time when she came to us at 10 weeks old and shortly after, we switched to raw ( for the cancer dog) which she has been on since.

Are there any raw feeders out there that have dealt with adjusting for a low phosphorus diet?

I have no personal experience with feeding a raw diet that is low in phosphorus. I use(d) the regular Feline Instinct supplement to mix with raw meat. Their
kidney support diet has great testimonials and I know they are happy to answer any questions.

I don't have experience. I want to say, I hope Tasha gets well and that she and you get to enjoy some more quality time together. hugs to you both!

I am so sorry you are dealing with this. One of our kitties also had kidney problems once he got to be about 16.

Due to other issues that he had, we didn't do the SQ fluids. I managed diet with the goal being low phosphorous levels. I found this chart to be a huge help:

I now have another kitty recovering from a bad kidney infection plus pancreatitis, one of which led to sepsis. I went back to this good old chart and have a window on my phone open to it so I can check it while in the pet food aisle.

Note: I have not tried raw, but the chart covers those diets as well.

You can get tons of info from here google-tanya's feline crf support group I don't have experience with a raw diet, but some people use a phosphorous binder in regular food. The Tanya site or book has lots of info on foods. There is a Tanya book on amazon. My cat had severe kidney disease for just under 5 years, then died of something unrelated, He was happy and had no clue he had anything wrong with him till he got cancer BTW if you are buying the fluids from the vet, they are much cheaper elsewhere with a RX, At Costco I got them for $41 for 2 cases of 12 bags each.
