Large accessories, like glazed pots, or sculpture etc- one to each shelf. Make sure they are large enough in scale or they will look ditzy.

I like the idea of pictures just maybe of the kids. I'm hesitant to do anything glass or breakable. I love wood and metal. What about baskets?

I have attached a quick rendering of my idea for stacking pottery/ urns with natural sticks as well as I believe that a large mirror on the tall wall behind would give it a much needed depth. (I have attached an example of an urn but you can also find them darker toned, and less aged if you prefer - depends on your current interior theme).

If you are going to use the steps as a display area, line the top and face of each with a marble or travertine tile. I think a softer colored tile will leave a better presentation space for each keepsake.

No to kids pictures....it's a tricky spot....can look cluttered quick.....possibly just paint one or two shades darker than walls and leave bare.....??? good luck

I agree with the paint comment. Paint the bottom part an accent colour or a darker shade then I would add some candleholder lanterns but only two or three dirt enemy sizes and all on the same ledge - when you ligjt the candles the eye will be instantly drawn up there ! Don't clutter this area with baskets , pictures or knick knacks.

How about wooden vases. Three different sizes. Smaller but to scale on the bottom, bigger in the center and larger at the top. In the large vase I would place burch branches that fill the blank wall. If you place puck lights into the leadges and use glass vases you can place the colored vases over the lights and really hi lite then.

For the location, whatever you do anchor the display items with museum wax. the areas are dramatic, but i can just see someone hurtling down the stairs carelessly.
