Long thin living room 3 entrances, tons of windows, few walls, help!

I'm stumped. We've just installed (not yet stained) oak hardwood floors in our small living room which has 3 entrances - 1 from front door, 1 from the kitchen, and 1 from large glass door which leads out to a small back yard deck. A challenging traffic pattern.

1. Living room - facing front door and stair wall

2. Living room facing front of house, left side

3. Living room facing back door to yard, kitchen door to left, stair wall, left

Tons of light and windows. High ceilings. The long interior wall across from the fireplace is mainly the stair landing - half wall with rails - not a solid wall.

The natural gathering of furniture would be around the fireplace, but the room is very narrow. The windows front and back have gorgeous views to gardens. I would think I need to break this up into 3 parts, back yard view, middle/fireplace, and front entrance. I've also thought of treating the fireplace (right now it's an 80s marble) from floor to ceiling to anchor the room.

Room measures 12 ft wide, 26 ft long (to back door walkout), usable floor space width from edge of fireplace tile to stair wall is (only) 8 ft 6 in.

The space is long, but not very wide. Thanks in advance for your creative advice!

Looks like a very nice space to work with. Gorgeous views.

Have you considered shutters or roman shades for the windows? You probably don't need any sort of drapes for the windows on each side of the fireplace.

Will there be a TV and where will it go?

Opt for a large painting for over the fireplace instead of tiling to the ceiling unless that is where TV is going?

Is there enough room to float the sofa 3 feet in front of the stair wall facing the fireplace?

If not, just put the sofa on the fireplace wall. People walk around furniture all the time.

I'd put some sort of console table or bench at the front window as a front entry stopping point.

How do you plan to use the space? Will you have a tv? Do you already have furniture?

TV - we have a family room right behind this room which mirrors this room's set up - a second fireplace also facing same direction - TV is already over the fireplace in that room .... but yes, if our teenager had his way, it would be another TV :-)

You might do an arrangement with just chairs in this room.

Two love seats facing each other?

I like the idea of floating a couch facing the fireplace.
Or you could try two accent chairs on the back door side, a coffee table, and a short couch/sofa table on the front door side.

Do you have dimensions of the room? Helps to play around with room planners.

Room dimensions: 12 ft wide, 26 ft long, usable floor space (width) from edge of fireplace floor tile to stair wall is 8 ft 6 in. - thank you for the room planner idea!

After playing with it some, I think two love seats would work nicely. Add a bench under the front window, a sofa table, and some plants.

Agree with a primary seating arrangement around fireplace. You might put a low bookcase and a reading chair in the front area instead of the bench that ascorsonelli suggested. Looks from photos like couch could face fireplace, which would leave access to windows more free than in the loveseats-facing configuration, and you could add a chair to either side, on an angle. If you go that way, just keep the furniture light -- slim couch, narrow coffee table -- to keep from crowding the narrow dimension.

Agree that new cladding on fireplace would also be terrific . . lovely architecture and such a pretty room.

Love the way that facing loveseats or apartment size sofas break up the length of the room and make it feel really large but not narrow. If you create a 12' seating grouping there, you still have sufficient room in front and rear to utilize area. For instance, you might like to do a lovely writing desk as a sofa table in the front space with a pretty upholstered chair that can be pulled around when you have a large group . . . the television can be hung opposite the fireplace. You would have room for a pedestal 36" table if you used a banquette on the fireplace wall near the rear garden . .
