we used DG on the ground, bark in the flowerbed (that stayed the same as before) and the plants mostly came from my yard and my neighbors yard. We have a lot of succulents and cacti.

Search the box above under Photos for xeriscape - you'll find lots of ideas. Make an ideabook of the ones that appeal to you, take pix of them to your local nursery so they can reproduce what you like with drought tolerant plants native to your locale.

Hi.. I like small rock gardens. The problem with laying rock over the whole yard is that rock will settle into the soil once the weed fabric decomposes and it will all be dirt and rock. We have lots of ideas! For your pathway, you could use pavers (either brick, concrete slabs, or natural stone) and line the paths with beds large enough to plant drought-tolerant plants like ornamental grasses or succulents. To add color try lavender, California poppies, salvia, yarrow, or Portulaca. For the areas that aren’t the path or the bed lining the path, you could add gravel as ground cover, or for a softer look add clover as your ground cover.
