Rentals are always hard to work with since there is much that cannot change. I'd think about layering an area rug over the current broadloom. Use the colours in the rug as a starting point for your paint colour. Floor to ceiling drapes hung about 4 inches from top of door casings. I'd remove the mirror or if you want a mirror to reflect the light, get a larger one with a substantial frame and hang it lower. I'm thinking that the large frame has photos. If you want to include photos, consider larger photos matted and framed separately. They can all be the same size or you can mix it up, but plan out the arrangement before you start hanging.
