It has me curious what she says as to why she likes it.... a little more color of others seems nice.

She likes that it doesn't compete with the rug too much. She loves the rug and her pinky beige wall colour.

She likes this dining light a lot. Simple and a little more contemporary than what she has. It's 24" in diameter. Is that too small? Her table width is 48" and probably about 72" long without the leaf. We tried one on the weekend that was 32" in diameter and she felt it was too large. I loved it, but she found it overwhelming.

Ideally whatever art is chosen it should be landscape in orientation to be in scale over the sofa. Some softer colour options that could work nicely & would work with existing decor. All paintings from CrabtreePrints on etsy. Reasonably priced & various sizes. You are a good sister-in-law!

One last suggestion. Ideally you should get your top 3 picks on approval & see them in situ as light changes the way they will look (it wouldn't matter if someone had donated a genuine Picasso to you; sadly this is not to be). If you can't get them on approval, I would suggest you take 3 photos of the room at: a) brightest light of the day b) on a dull & overcast day and c) at night with the lamps switched on. Then superimpose your top picks on each photo. For example, at night as your lamps are on the side only the edges of the art will be lit and shadows will be thrown across the rest of the art. Your sister-in-law also needs to consider what she is trying to achieve e.g. dramatic impact where the painting is the star of the room or a relaxing calm feel or a moody feeling or a major injection of colour or whatever. Finally art is a very personal thing & she needs to love it. Good luck!

Beverly.. We are considering this light. Any thoughts? She is also considering changing the coffee table to something with an open base. She's not sure about a glass top, but is open to suggestions. I think it would be nice to see more of the rug and lighten the dark brown a bit. Any suggestions?

I feel like the rug is calling for more curves in this room. Maybe a new table is an opportunity to bring in some softness?

She seems to have her heart set on an ottoman coffee table. She'd like to pull in more silvery taupe from the dining room, but we haven't hit the one yet. So far, this is her favourite combo. Any thoughts?

This Noguchi style table always looks stylish to me.

Did I notice a TV in this room? Just a little nervous about an ottoman coffee table in a room where TV watching occurs - lots of drinks, snacks etc. & the accompanying odd spill. Realise that a tray can go on top to help steady things however never as stable as a flat surface. Something to consider..... Some more options below - not a coffee table I would normally choose but the base ties in with other wood furniture in the room & nearby dining room & the pattern in the rug. The more I look at it it just seems to work in my opinion. Glass top opens the room up & adds another texture. Some more art alternatives as well to consider. Your sister-in-law can introduce more silver grey into the room through accessories on coffee table, switching photo frames over etc. Just some more ideas to confuse you even further!

Wow! Nice choices Allana. Where did you find the table and art? The table might be too contemporary for her taste, but it's worth a try. It's a fabulous choice for this room. Thankfully, she is backing off the ottoman. She has come to realize it's too casual for this room. And yes there is a tv in here.

Ok that coffee table might be too modern for her but the underlying theory is still the same - curved base on table in some format will look good with that rug. Perhaps some nesting coffee tables? Modern & elegant. See pic below. both on Houzz. Hundreds of versions out there ( just google in images) in all colours/glass/travertine/metal/wood etc

Update. She chose this art in the end. She's now considering a new coffee table... Possibly glass top or marble. Any thoughts? Should we be looking to balance the mix of white and cream in this room? Do they look "off" together?

I placed 2 'windows' side by side and seeing this green color, I liked that it drew out green in the art. She must've loved it - why not make hers green, to try it? [this many strips/ busy]. The art so dominant, possibly green accent in middle would take eye there/ balance idk??
