These are great options. I love the simple and clean lines. I'm really torn between going more trendy or keeping it clean-lined and classy.

Since i don’t see any lamps I think i would do a track light to give better overall lighting since a center light always creates shadows you could use some of the heads to light up the builtins too

I am not fond of overhead lights in a living room, especially with a TV. I prefer floor lamps, and tables with lamps on them. Overhead lighting sometimes causes a glare on the TV.

I think something simple and classic would be best. Or change it out for some recessed lights. The sputnik doesn't fit the style of the room. Great job on built-ins!

I would add some floor lamps though for more diffused lighting especially at night. Here are a couple of ideas from Overstock.

Rooms need three kinds of lighting; ambient (like your ceiling fixture which you turn on so you don't fall over things getting into the room in the dark,) task (these would be table and floor lamps or a desk lamp to turn on before dimming or turning off the ambient ceiling fixture,) and accent lighting (these would be lights inside the cabinet to accent the decor there, or an uplight under a plant to cast pretty foliage shadows on the ceiling and make the plant a stand-out!) You need all three, and since you're looking for a dining light too, keep in mind that down shining light washes out the food and casts nose and other shadows on diners' faces. You can find a semi-flush fixture for the LR and a chandelier in the same style for the dining table (hang no higher than 36" above the table top.)

Thanks everyone! Decorenthusiast- I would love to have all that lighting but the problem is that we have limited floor space and awkward wall openings. Do you have any suggestions for in the shelving units or on the bay window ledge though? Not sure if that would work for more places for light.

IMO, any but the sputnik - because the light from it will be glaring and in your face. If you have a dining room open to this space, try to find a matching chandy for one of the fixtures and take that one over the others. You can tuck a floor lamp in almost anywhere. Same with a skinny reading lamp. Check your local hardware superstore for aftermarket LED lights for cabinetry. Your clever hubby should be able to retrofit some into the cabinets. Put a skinny sofa table between the sofa and the bay with a pair of table lamps.

I have a sputnik in my family room and while I love the look, it puts off an incdedible amount of heat. I would only use them in open large rooms with vaulted ceilings. So for your cozy room, no. A flush mount is the best option to me. There are some beautiful scalloped edged quadrafoil shaped ones out there

I like the 3rd and 4th one in your pic. Just know that anything w/a diffuser under the bulb area, will dim the light. I have one of these fixtures and it's not that bright. make sure you get one with a min of 2 light, with a max wattage that can handle a 75 or 100w bulb.

I also think the tv looks fine over the fireplace.

Just as a suggestion, have you thought about painting the back wall of your bookcases??Just something to give it a little extra something. A med-dark gray to play off your couch or even a very light blue or whatever other color you have going on in the room.

Good to know about the Sputnik...will go for the clean lines contemporary one :). Beth - I have thought of painting the backs but we had it professionally painted just a bit ago so I'm gonna wait on that for now. I love all white too and the fact that I can do whatever I want without limits in the shelves!

Hello! Fantastic space and well done on the built-ins! Completely agree with layering light, it makes all the difference. It is also really important to get the scale of the fixture correct. One tip is to always scale up, a small light fixture can look like a mistake while a more oversized one can look like a statement! Take the length of the room and add the width of the room to get an approximate diameter to target. Best of luck- design your day fabulous!

was on my iPad so it shows as zzmom40..its me HIWE...you could also do a very modern track light so it gives you better lighting...they work well with low ceilings....not my first choice but can be very practical in your case...
