Are you keeping the glass balls and want them to stand out more. How about painting the wall inside the alcove only bright white?

Depending on the depth of your alcove, you need to add something below your glass balls. A simple table with an ottoman beneath it will balance the space.

Another feature put in by a builder who thinks he's a designer. Totally unnecessary and always a problem.

Love the glass balls...could they go on another wall? Like around the corner over the chest?

The room looks like it could use some color. You could tile it with darker 1 inch square glass mosaics or pebbles and put a plant in front of it. If there is room, you could use it as a small desk area with a 24 inch deep wood shelf and hand a print you like above it, put some interesting objects on it you can't do it if there is a narrow doorway adjacent. It would be helpful if you could post more picture of the space to the left and right and give dimensions of the alcove.

Irene, remember that this mirror design can be done with clear, color tinted, and smokey mirrors, as well as marbleized, veined, speckled and textured mirrors, just to name a few. Although I love the clear beveled mirror shown. So go out there and make your alcove pop.

Since you have electrical in that wall you could also put a light at the top of the alcove for nice ambient light in the entry.

I am always looking for hidden storage for valuables. In this application if you were to do the boxed columns on either side of the mirror, you could first remove the drywall exposing the framing and install shelves within. Then when you wood the surface for the columns you can have the front panel mounted with hidden hinges and magnetic push latches or just strong magnets for a tighter fit. Only you would know that storage is inside. LOL Well you and your carpenter.
