Design Help Needed

last modified: 10 years ago

My garden, except for my box or crayola crayons section, is dominated by cool pinks, purple, burgundy, deep/dark reds, lavender, white and blue. My problem stems from also liking apricot pink, coral pink and some of the other pinks that are described as warm pinks. I do not know where to place Sonia Rykiel and April Love. Right now, they both are sitting in two gallon pots awaiting Fall planting. Abraham Darby, a rose I have coveted for years, may not be purchased because I just do not know where to place it. Planting these warm pinks near a white rose seems like a no-brainer to me, but I do not have many white roses, and those that exist are already buffering a transition from one color to another. What colors are your warm pink roses near and why?

Here are examples of the colors/roses in question.

I am horrible at design! But I think the roses you have would blend in okay - they are all soft blend able colors.

I hope you get more help and I am in complete agreement with what Kes and Dingo said. I'm more of a plant them and let them clash kind of person. Although I do tend to try to put a color in between to blend them better. I get so many roses, I'm so addicted, they have no choice but to clash somewhat. Hopefully the people who are good at design will chime in soon, and have me wishing I was any good at it! Cheers!

Lynn, I love your choice! where did you get Sonya from? I heard she's intensely fragrant and doing great in zone 10... wanted to try it... as for color I agree with Kes Z, purple will look good with these colors... but I know that in our heat any purple can become too bright to be a buffer color... If you have other plants with that color - that would look great any time of the year :) Or from another hand these roses can be a buffer themselves going from cold pink/red tones to warmer ones... Pick the coolest, least apricot to start the transition with... Good luck :)

I'm waiting for additional responses myself, as I'm also drawn to these colours more and more. The paler apricots and darker warm pinks do look very good with some of the darker crimson reds. I have a hardy glad that incorporates both colours and using it as a template, planted a crimson dianthus at the foot of Viking Queen. It's very striking, but not bold. As you say, whites and especially creams seem to make them all go together. In the place where I want a flashy orange-pink rose, I'm looking for pale pink, cream and white background with lots of greenery in a mixed bed. Perhaps some lime green, as well. It's just in my head, so I hope others will post their pics.

As long as the colors are soft enough I don't worry too much about mixing cool and warm colors any more. You can easily get in trouble with intense shades, but with soft color, with perhaps some perennials as buffers, I think you can get away with mixing these lovely roses into your general color scheme.

Thank you all for your assistance!! Your input has helped tremendously. While I have white, or white blushed with pink roses, cream is one rose color that I do not have in abundance.

I do not have cream or white roses next to the spot where I contemplated placing these roses. White roses just did not seem to be exactly what I wanted placed next to these warm pinks. Using cream colored roses never entered my mind. I am thinking a cream colored rose (maybe Classic Woman or Cream Veranda....), plus Sonia Rykiel ( I purchased it from Roses Unlimited) , and Russian Sage or purple salvia....

I will do the same thing (color combo/plants wise) with April Love, and actually order Abraham Darby now:)
